Dal pittoresco borgo medievale di Castelnuovo, che discende ripido in un dedalo di stradine e scale, si esce nei castagneti, molti dei quali ancora ben coltivati per la produzione dei pregiatissimi marroni.<\/p>\n

Con sentieri e stradine comode si giunge nel fondovalle del Torrente Pavone, dove il paesaggio \u00e8 dolce, verde e luminoso, aperto verso la mirabile vista di Castelnuovo in alto.<\/p>\n

Scendendo ancora un poco si comincia a percepire l’odore e la sensazione umida del fiume, che si ode gorgogliare fino alla vista di un’arcata spettacolare, che, da secoli, sovrasta il corso d\u2019acqua. Purtroppo non \u00e8 possibile salirci, a causa del crollo delle spallette, ma la vista, guadando le fresche acque del torrente, trasmette il fascino della storia.<\/p>\n

The itinerary begins with a visit to the Medieval village of Castelnuovo, honored with the orange flag of the Touring Club Italiano, the seal of quality for environmental tourism that marks the \u201cmost beautiful villages of Italy.\u201d\u00a0 Surrounded by the deep chestnut woods that cover the countryside, the medieval center of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina rises perched on a hill strangely shaped like a pine cone. The village is unspoiled and characterized by its homogeneous architecture, where one can stroll through tight, winding, stone-paved alleyways and medieval gates, with sudden glimpses of the valley.<\/p>\n

Wandering through the steep streets, you should be sure to visit: the parochial church of Ss. Salvatore, which is built on the foundations of the ancient castle and holds an early 1300 crucifix considered one of the most important examples of the Pisan school of sculpture, the crypt below the church from which one can return to the town, the Oratory of San Rocco, and the village church. Entering the village from the upper area, one follows the so called \u201cchiassino,\u201d one of the narrowest alleyways in the world, and finds oneself suddenly in the midst of the ancient town center.<\/p>\n

From the piazza in front of the Church and from the upper part of the village, you can admire the expanse of countryside toward the Cornate di Fosini, the highest of the Colline Metallifere.<\/p>\n

Leaving town, you descend amidst chestnut groves, some of which are still tended, toward the floor of the valley of the Pavone, which is reached by an easy pleasant cart track running through oaks and farms.<\/p>\n

Shortly you arrive at the Pavone, one of the pristine waterways of Tuscany, both in the level of its environs and the state of the quality of its water. The Medieval Defizio Bridge unfortunately cannot today be used, but it still remains an imposing and fascinating piece of evidence of the ancient road which crossed the Pavone.<\/p>\n

The High Bridge (ponte Alto) was used to transport goods; now impassible, it is completely overgrown with vegetation and survives above all as a historical artifact in a highly evocative location. The Defizio bridge retains most of its original structure from 1200; the structure is characterized by its pronounced donkey-backed form which supports a single central span. Climbing back up to the village past woods and chestnut groves, there is an old mill, now renovated but once used for the production of chestnut
