This is an impressive Sixteenth Century complex which stands in the historic 511 centre of Portoferraio and was originally built to accommodate the Knights of the Order of Saint Stephen.<\/p>\n
After the Order moved to Pisa, the building underwent various transformations, and from a Franciscan priory it was subsequently converted into a barracks in the early Nineteenth Century. Recently restored and now used as a multi-purpose cultural centre, it is named after Cesare De Laugier, a Napoleonic officer whose mother came from Portoferraio, who served heroically at Curtatone and Montanara.<\/p>\n
