The Dockyard of Galleasses, that nowadays hosts a supermarket and many shops \u2013 was built in the sixteenth century by Cosimo de’ Medici with the aim of sheltering the galleasses of the Order of Santo Stefano Knights and of the Tuscan Grand Duke navy afterwards, which had the task of protecting the city from the sea.<\/p>\n

Even today, going for a walk through the shops, you can admire the round arches and part of the aqueduct supported by arches.<\/p>\n

Go into \u201cPiazza Cavour\u201d from \u201cPorta a Mare\u201d and take the road on the right.<\/p>\n

The fortresses of Portoferraio are a massive, majestic architectural k complex built starting in 1548 by Cosimo I de Medici to protect the harbour and the town (then known as Cosmopoli) from the threat posed by the terrible pirates of the time. Thanks to these impregnable fortifications, Portoferraio was the only town on the island to withstand the attacks of the dreaded pirate Dragut in 1553.<\/p>\n

The town’s defences were gradually reinforced from 1570 onwards, even under the direction of Bernardo Buontalenti, and were used to provide accommodation for the armed forces as well as important look-out posts. Today, the fortresses offer attractive walks, where visitors can marvel at views of great beauty or enjoy a pleasant combination of past and present, soaking up the town’s illustrious history.<\/p>\n

The Foresiana Library gathers Napoleon\u2019s private library (about 2000 volumes) that was donated by the Emperor to Portoferraio at the end of his stay in the island: pieces of history, literature, military arts, geography, legislation and Greek and Latin classics coming from the Fointainebleau castle.<\/p>\n

It was soon opened to the public on 1815 but it lost several volumes after Napoleon\u2019s defeat at Waterloo.<\/p>\n

From the Italian Unification, the Portoferraio Municipality together with the Ministry of Public Education have worked together in order to increase the Library by enhancing the number of volumes: all intellectuals men and citizens were asked to donate their pieces. The humanist Mario Foresi gave 14000 volumes of great importance enhancing the collection quite a lot.<\/p>\n

At the Foresiana Library, you can examine in depth the Island and its people, thanks to the area devoted to Elba and Tuscan Archipelago and by consulting the ancient newspapers.<\/p>\n

How to get there<\/h3>\n

Starting from Piazza Cavour, run along the Town Hall and go up to \u201cSalita Napoleone\u201d. The steep road on the left side leads to the large square of the De Laugier Cultural Center.<\/p>\n

Put a pair of boots on and climb to the top of \u201cVolterraio\u201d in order to discover the remains of the Castle and live a unique experience that rewards your effort once you look out from its walls.<\/p>\n

An original and magnificent point of view on the whole Portoferraio Bay and the Island. At the top you feel yourself invincible and soon understand the reason why the Elba ancient inhabitants built this impregnable castle: to resist lots of hostile incursions which occurred over the ages, with the aim of conquering this pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.<\/p>\n

Lose yourself among the walk rounds, the watchtower, the seventeenth century Chapel and the hexagonal entrance and go back to the past.<\/p>\n

Symbol of the Elba proud, the Castle of Volterraio was built in 1200s (under Pisan domination) at the top of the stark and rock mountain bearing the same name (384 meters high), maybe on the remains of an Etruscan fortress, according to a project by the architect Vanni di Gherardo Rau.<\/p>\n

During the 15th and 16th centuries, it was a refuge for the locals that were besieged by Ligurian, Tunisian and Turkish pirates. It was fortified under Medici and Lorena dominations and then abandoned in the late 1700s.<\/p>\n

In 1999 the Tuscan Archipelago National Park bought and restored it but people who wanted to visit and appreciate its ancient and grandiose charm had to wait till 2016.<\/p>\n

How to get there<\/h3>\n

Coming from Portoferraio, take the road to \u201cPorto Azzurro\u201d. After approximately 6 km, turn left in the direction of Magazzini \u2013 Bagnaia and at about 1,5 km further on, turn right for \u201cRio nell’Elba\u201d. Continue along this street until you reach a large open space where you can park your car. A little further take the dirt track that leads to the Castle.<\/p>\n

This is an impressive Sixteenth Century complex which stands in the historic 511 centre of Portoferraio and was originally built to accommodate the Knights of the Order of Saint Stephen.<\/p>\n

After the Order moved to Pisa, the building underwent various transformations, and from a Franciscan priory it was subsequently converted into a barracks in the early Nineteenth Century. Recently restored and now used as a multi-purpose cultural centre, it is named after Cesare De Laugier, a Napoleonic officer whose mother came from Portoferraio, who served heroically at Curtatone and Montanara.<\/p>\n

Neoclassical and simple outside, baroque and convoluted inside: the Church of \u201cSantissimo Sacramento\u201d is a suggestive building whose external austerity hides an astonishing inside marked by plasters, helical columns and baroque frescoes.<\/p>\n

Built in the sixteenth century, it was partially destroyed during the Second World War and then rebuilt.<\/p>\n

In the corner of \u201cPiazzale De Laugier\u201d, along the evocative \u201cSalita Napoleone\u201d, you will find the baroque Church of Misecordia, built in 1677 for the \u201cArciconfraternita della Reverenda Misericordia\u201d (The Confraternity of the Reverend Mercy) founded by Giovanni de\u2019 Medici in the 16th Century.<\/p>\n

The little church still holds relics of the patron saint of Portoferraio, Saint Cristino, in a shrine under the altar. They were found in Rome, in the 17th Century, inside the Catacomb of Priscilla and then donated by Pope Alessandro VII to the \u201cReverenda Confraternita della Misericordia\u201d (The Reverend Confraternity of Mercy) of Portoferraio.<\/p>\n

Travel along a road surrounded by vineyards and olive trees where everything smells of Mediterranean and finally you can see it: a snow-white little church characterized by Romanesque shapes that calls to mind the Pisa Cathedral, dating from the end of 1100s and still open for worship and religious ceremonies.<\/p>\n

The original and wonderful facade is divided into three round blind arches resting on pilasters and decorated with unusual animalistic and anthropomorphic figures sculpted in marble.<\/p>\n

The majestic Cemetery of Mercy, with its horseshoe like structure, is located not far from the town centre. It had been built on the second half of the nineteenth century by the Confraternity of Mercy as a burial site for their members.<\/p>\n

It is a place where you can roam if you have a thrill-seeking disposition: crossing the gate, guarded by big skulls, you stroll across sorrowful neo-classic statues and Neo-Ghotic little shrines.<\/p>\n

Forte Falcone, erected in 1548, is one of the three key points of the ‘4M defensive system of Cosmopoli, together with Forte Stella and the Torre della Linguella. Designed by Giovan Battista Bellucci and then built under the direction of Giovanni Camerini, it is on Portoferraio’s highest hill (79 m above sea level) and is accessed along a winding road that leads to the entrance, which stands behind an avant-corps dating from the 18th Century.<\/p>\n

Above the massive wooden door, a marble plaque commemorating the foundation of Cosmopoli by Grand Duke Cosimo I is similar to those on the Porta a Mare and Forte Stella. The main doorway leads into a large room with a barrel-vaulted roof. This is the starting-point for the internal corridors which were originally the core of the defences of the Fort (which totals 2,360 m2 in area); and ran alongside the moat (with slit windows at regular intervals).<\/p>\n

Underneath the floor is one of the large cisterns built on the orders of Cosimo I to collect rainwater and thus guarantee a secure water supply in case ofsiege. The rooms inside the ramparts, with barrel or cross-vaulted ceilings, were used as small storerooms or dungeons. The walkway which runs around the edge of the fort leads to the side overlooking the sea, where the sheer cliffs provide natural defences capable of repelling any assailant.<\/p>\n

Only two of the four watch-towers on the corners of the fort now remain: the one in the North-East corner with a well conserved Cross of Lorraine and the one in the South-West, rebuilt in the postwar years.<\/p>\n

Built on the hill of San Rocco, \u201cForte Inglese\u201d was realized by Cosimo III Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1700s with the aim of protecting the city of Portoferraio from the ground attacks.<\/p>\n

From then on, the fort had a troubled history: Gian Gastone, the last of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, pulled it down, driven by his fear that the fort would have been a danger more than a protection, becoming a weapon in the enemy’s hands.<\/p>\n

And so it was: in 1796 English people landed in Portoferraio and took possession of the ruins of the Fort in order to rebuild it (for this reason it was called \u201cForte Inglese\u201d). In 1802 Napoleon, at that time First Council, ordered to demolish and rebuild the fortress during the general fortification of the city. In doing so, the fortress became a strategic point of protection during his empire.<\/p>\n

\u201cForte Inglese\u201d was turned into a lazaret for typhoid patients during the 1800s and into a prison after Italy’s Unification. At the time of the Second World War it acted as antiaircraft battery base and then as bomb shelter for locals. It also became home for low-income families until the ’80s.<\/p>\n

Today it hosts temporary exhibitions and events and it offers an amazing view on Elba landscape.<\/p>\n

Built in 1548 by Cosimo I Grand Duke of Tuscany in order to defend Cosmopoli, \u201cForte Stella\u201d, together with \u201cForte Falcone\u201d and \u201cTorre della Linguella\u201d represents the heart of the Medicean fortifications built by Giovan Battista Bellucci and Giovanni Camerini.<\/p>\n

The fort is equipped with tunnels and loopholes to counter enemy attacks. It stands 49 meters above sea level and it is characterized by the bright red color of its bricks which is made up of.<\/p>\n

The visitor can have a special view on the old town and the bay, now as it was then.<\/p>\n

The entrance of the fortress housed once a Cosimo’s bust in bronze, made by Benvenuto Cellini, which was removed in 1781 by Grand Duke Leopoldo and then taken to Florence. Today it is exhibited in the Bargello Museum. Grand Duke Leopoldo also built a majestic lighthouse (replacing the original one) which dominates the hill.<\/p>\n

Opened to the public in 1988, the museum consists of 2 rooms displaying archaeological finds arranged on the basis of a historical-geographical approach, curated by the archaeologists of the University of Pisa Archaeology Department, led by Prof. Orlanda Pancrazzi. The period covered runs from the late VIII – early VII Century B. C. to the V Century A.D.<\/p>\n

The large collection of materials from Elba and the Archipelago is displayed in showcases accompanied by explanatory panels: topics linked to Elba’s economy, from iron ores to the maritime trade in wines, not to mention a description of the various parts of the ships (the many amphorae with their contents have made it possible to reconstruct the trade in foodstuff’s).<\/p>\n

One rare item is the iron anchor from the Montecristo wreck, to which marine deposits have stuck a large number of black painted goblets and jars from the vessel’s stores. One particularly fine piece is the Ara di Attiano, or Altar of Attianus, in granite, dating from the II Century A.D., found near the Seccheto granite quarries and dedicated to Hercules by Attianus, who may have been the prefect of the Emperor Hadrian’s Praetorian Guard.<\/p>\n

Another case contains the finest materials from the private collections donated by the Foresi and Mellini families, the latter considered the progenitors of the archaeological museum (they actually displayed some of the finds at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in the closing years of the 19th Century).<\/p>\n

By the side of the Church of Misericordia, you can find vestments, pots, monstrances and sacred goblet by visiting the museum of Napoleon\u2019s antiques.<\/p>\n

Some of all exhibited objects will really strike you: the Banner with three goldthread embroidered bees (given by Napoleon to the Elba Island the day of his landing on the 4th of May 1814); the bronze mask representing a dying Napoleon (donated by the prince Anatolio Demidoff); Napoleon\u2019s right hand bronze cast.<\/p>\n

Do not forget the manual traction ambulance too, restored on 2016 by the Portoferraio Misericordia.<\/p>\n

The Biscotteria Palace is nowadays the location of the town hall in the heart of the old town.<\/p>\n

It was built by Cosimo I in order to create a biscuit factory capable of feed all Medicean garrisons and provide all inhabitants of the new town and all Elba Island with the necessary bread.<\/p>\n

Several restoration works had been performed on the fa\u00e7ade in the nineteenth century which determined the present appearance of this building. A commemorative plaque can be seen on the fa\u00e7ade to remember Napoleon\u2019s exile in the island. In the courtyard, you will find a copy of a Roman altar dedicated by Publio Acilio Attiano (the Praetorian Prefect lived between the first and second century A.D. and the supposed owner of the \u201cVilla Romana delle Grotte\u201d) to Hercules. The original Altar is exhibited at the Linguella Archaeological Museum.<\/p>\n

If you are interested in examining the places and personalities who portrayed the history of the Elba Island, the Foresiana art gallery (located on the second floor of the De Laugier barrack) will offer you an interesting perspective of the Island, thanks to its collection of artefacts, portraits, prints and painting landscapes by several artists such as Signorini, Morandini, Nomellini etc.<\/p>\n

This collection, donated in 1914 by Mario Foresi (an intellectual citizen from Elba), is divided into twelve thematic areas showing muskets, swords and antique furniture in addition to painting and prints. The key to the city, given to Napoleon on 1814, can be see there too.<\/p>\n

How to get there<\/h3>\n

Starting from Piazza Cavour, go past the Municipal Building and go up to \u201cSalita Napoleone\u201d. The steep road on the left side leads to the large square of the De Laugier Cultural Center.<\/p>\n

Born in Portoferraio in 1948 where he currently lives and works, Sergio Marianelli has his own studio-exhibition in via Guerrazzi 75. You can find his works throughout Italy, in private collections in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Ireland, Great Britain, UK, United States, Brazil and Austria.<\/p>\n

Marianelli is a designer, professional technician and also poet, photographer, painter, cinematographer. He produces himself the colors for his paintings, made from a mix of powdered mineral and colored soil. His favorite subject are trees, sea, men and women of the people and everything that deals with nature.<\/p>\n

A small masterpiece standing in the heart of Portoferraio has three tiers of 5111 boxes and is one of the many reminders of Napoleons short stay on Elba. Built in 1814 by using and converting a deconsecrated church once dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, it was recently restored.<\/p>\n

Napoleon raised funds for its construction by offering 65 boxes for sale, causing great antagonism between Elba’s leading families, since they all wanted to buy the most expensive boxes to make their social importance clear to the population at large! The Torre del Martello is a superb piece of military architecture, built to defend the harbour in the early 16th Century on the orders of Cosimo I de’ Medici as part of his plan to fortify what was then the town of Cosmopoli.<\/p>\n

From 1550 onwards a chain (135 metres long) was actually installed beside the tower, running across to the Gallo breakwater, to block off the entrance to the harbour; as well as this barrier function, it was also used as an aid to collecting customs dues. Until the second half of the 18th Century, the Linguella tower (also known as the Torre del Martello, or Hammer Tower, due to its shape) was mainly used for storing salt and for processing the annual tuna catch, then it was converted into a prison.<\/p>\n

It became infamous as the location where the anarchist Giovanni Passannante (who attempted to assassinate Italian King Umberto I of Savoy in Naples in November 1878) was imprisoned and suffered terrible treatment. The future Italian President Sandro Pertini. Seriously damaged by bombing raids during the two World Wars, the tower was rebuilt and restored in the 1970s. During these works, the remains of the foundations and floor of a previous building that actually dated back to Roman times came to light.<\/p>\n

Today the \u201cPalazzina dei Mulini\u201d, once official residence of Napoleon, is a National Museum and it is currently being restored. Built in 1724 by Gran Duke Gian Gastone de\u2019 Medici, it was then re-adapted by Napoleon who explained his wishes to the architect Paolo Bargigli from Livorno, in particular about the creation of a Ball room, that was lacking in the initial construction.<\/p>\n

The original furniture was unfortunately lost. Thanks to an accurate reclamation project, the residence has been refurbished with gorgeous empire furnishings from the nineteenth century that recreate the atmosphere of the Napoleonic period.<\/p>\n

The library, instead, hosts original books (mostly volumes brought by Napoleon himself from Fontainbleu libraries) or donations from his uncle Cardinal Fesch.<\/p>\n

The garden that lies between the \u201cPalazzina\u201d and the sea is embellished by two beautiful statues: a Minerva dated back to the Ancient Greece and a copy of Galatea by Antonio Canova (probably inspired by Paulina Borghese), whereas the original one is kept at the Galleria Demidoff in San Martino.<\/p>\n

Villa San Martino was once Napoleon summer residence. It is in the countryside, about 5 km from the center of Portoferraio.<\/p>\n

Is it to Count Anatolio Demidoff , married to Napoleon\u2019s niece, Matilde of Monfort, we owe the majestic neoclassical architecture that welcomes visitors. He built it in 1851 with the intentions of establishing a memorial museum, hosting the ex-Emperor\u2019s memorabilia.<\/p>\n

The Gallery Demidoff extends at the foot of the initial residence and, once inside, you can contemplate the statue of the original Galatea, the inspiration for which was Paulina Borghese, sculpted by Canova and initially destined to embellish the gardens of \u201cPalazzina dei Mulini\u201d (a copy of the statue, in fact, was put on display right there).<\/p>\n

Noteworthy are the Egyptian room, with an octagonal pool designed to accommodate papyrus plants, and the \u201cSala del Nodo d\u2019Amore\u201d (Love Knot Hall), destined to be the dining room, whose frescoes represent love between Napoleon and Maria Luisa.<\/p>\n

Nell’Area archeologica della Linguella, lungo la lingua di terra che chiude a nord la Baia di Portoferraio, puoi immergerti nel fascino pi\u00f9 antico dell’isola.
\nLa Villa Romana della Linguella, di cui si trovano i resti, risale alla seconda met\u00e0 del I secolo a.C.
\nAmmira la posizione invidiabile in cui sorgeva questa villa marittima costruita da nobili romani, affacciata sulle acque azzurre della baia, e passeggia fra quelle che furono le sali termali della dimora, che conservano ancora i pavimenti a mosaico.<\/p>\n

La villa fu ampliata nel corso del II secolo d.C, epoca in cui si ritiene vi abbia soggiornato anche il prefetto del pretorio dell’imperatore Adriano.<\/p>\n

Andata in rovina e abbandonata a partire dal III sec. d.C, fu riedificata insieme a tutta l’area dal Granduca Cosimo de’ Medici per realizzarne una fortezza difensiva.
\nLa villa fu riportata alla luce da scavi archeologici alla fine degli anni Settanta, fortemente compromessa dagli interventi medicei.<\/p>\n

\u201cVilla Romana delle Grotte\u201d is the best-preserved Roman luxury residence meant to leisure of the whole Island.<\/p>\n

This magnificent villa, built in I century AD and probably owned by the Consul Marco Valerio Messalla’s family, has always dominated Portoferraio bay from the top of the ridge and still stands the test of time.<\/p>\n

There was a frescoed porch (peristilium)<\/em> that surrounded the internal water tank from which rooms, gardens and thermal baths with frigidarium<\/em> and calidarium<\/em> spread out.<\/p>\n

About 5 km from Portoferraio, travelling along the road to \u201cPorto Azzurro\u201d.<\/p>\n
