L’Ospedale nacque alla fine del 1888 grazie al lascito testamentario predisposto nel 1879 dal Cav. Benedetto Naldini del Riccio, con il quale si volle dotare il territorio di una struttura per assistere i poveri infermi. Fin dalla nascita, l\u2019Ospedale cont\u00f2 anche sulle elargizioni del Marchese Carlo Torrigiani per l\u2019acquisto delle attrezzature sanitarie, per cui a partire dal 1944 assunse la denominazione \u00a0\u201cNaldini Torrigiani\u201d. Al sostegno concesso annualmente dal Comune si aggiunsero inoltre i contributi della locale cooperativa di consumo e della Misericordia. L\u2019Ospedale era dotato di una sala operatoria, di un ambulatorio e di un gabinetto radiologico e pass\u00f2 presto dagli iniziali 16 posti letti a una sessantina di posti, con un incremento continuo fino a raggiungere negli anni Settanta un centinaio di posti letto e milleduecento ricoverati. Con la riforma sanitaria del 1978 \u00a0l’Ospedale divenne presidio ospedaliero dell\u2019Unit\u00e0 Sanitaria Locale. The hospital in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa was built at the end of 1888 thanks to the testamentary legacy disposed in 1879 by Cav. Benedetto Naldini del Riccio, who wanted to equip the territory with a structure to assist the sick poor people. From its birth the hospital also counted on the donations of the Marquis Carlo Torrigiani for the purchase of sanitary equipment, and for this reason in 1944 it assumed the name “Naldini Torrigiani”. Annual support and contributions were granted by the Municipality, the local consumer cooperative and the local Misericordia. The hospital was equipped with an operating room, an outpatient department and a radiological cabinet. It soon passed from the initial 16 beds to about 60 places, reaching a hundred beds and 1,200 hospitalized patients in the seventies. With the health reform of 1978, the hospital became a branch hospital unit of the local Health Care services. Nella seconda met\u00e0 dell’Ottocento si registra un periodo di grande sviluppo ed espansione, lungo la strada che conduce al Borghetto, dove si estendevano terreni di grandi proprietari fondiari come i Naldini e i Torrigiani, chiamati i \u201cfitti\u201d, ovvero dati in affitto. Il volto del paese si trasformava: i Torrigiani concessero al Comune il terreno dove fu realizzata nel 1859 l’attuale Piazza Matteotti, alla fine del XIX secolo furono finanziate la costruzione dell’ospedale, della caserma dei carabinieri, del Palazzo Comunale, dell’asilo gestito da religiose e la realizzazione delle fognature, dei lastrici e dell’illuminazione pubblica. In questa piazzetta agli inizi del novecento fu realizzato una fontana a servizio dei cittadini e dell’asilo, denominata \u201cpompa de’ fitti\u201d. L\u2019acqua scorreva dal nasello posto lateralmente: ancora oggi \u00e8 visibile il gancio che serviva a sorreggere un secchio o una mezzina di rame. In the second half of the nineteenth century there was a period of great development and expansion, along the road that leads to Borghetto, land owned by landlords such as Naldini and Torrigiani, called “fitti” (rented out). The face of the village was transformed: the Torrigiani granted to the municipality the land where the current Piazza Matteotti was built in 1859, at the end of the nineteenth century the construction of the hospital, the carabinieri barracks, the Palazzo Comunale Municipality, the playschool run by religious orders and the construction of sewers, paving and public lighting. In this small square at the beginning of the twentieth century a fountain was built to serve citizens and the playschool, called \u201crenters pump”. The water flowed from the nose-piece placed sideways: the hook that was used to hold a bucket or a half-copper is still visible today. Il Palazzo \u00e8 stato realizzato negli anni Venti del Novecento su terreni donati dalla famiglia Torrigiani, proprietaria di vasti possedimenti sul territorio. Il 29 ottobre 1929 fu inaugurato come sede della Casa del Fascio. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale la sede del Comune (nato nel 1893) fu incendiata e tutta la documentazione riguardante l\u2019abitato and\u00f2 perduta. Per questo l\u2019edificio fu restaurato dall\u2019Amministrazione Comunale e gi\u00e0 dal 7 marzo 1945 vi install\u00f2 i propri uffici. Dal 1946 l\u2019immobile \u00e8 pervenuto al Demanio dello Stato diventando sede di scuole, uffici comunali, associazioni. Attualmente ospita la Sala del Consiglio Comunale. Dal punto di vista architettonico rappresenta un interessante esempio di stile neomedievale, bench\u00e9 restaurato. The Palace was built in the nineteen twenties of the twentieth century on lands donated by the Torrigiani family, owners of vast holdings in the area. On 29 October 1929 it was inaugurated as the headquarters of the Casa del Fascio. During the Second World War the town hall established in 1893) was burned down and all the documentation concerning the town was lost. For this reason the building was restored by the Municipal Administration and already from the 7th of March 1945 installed its offices there. Since 1946, the building has been the State Property Office, becoming the seat of schools, municipal offices, associations. Currently it houses the Hall of the City Council. From an architectural point of view it represents an interesting example of neo-medieval style, although it has been restored. Il nome latino Tabernulae (piccola bottega, osteria), da cui deriva Tavarnelle, si riferisce alle locande con stalle per il cambio dei cavalli, simili a quelle che si vedono oggi nell’area chiamata l’Ortone, lungo Via Roma, e che fin dall\u2019epoca medievale, ospitavano i viaggiatori. Posto sulla strada di collegamento tra Firenze e Siena, il borgo si ampli\u00f2 costantemente per la sua posizione strategica e nel 1822, oltre alle Poste Reali per il cambio dei cavalli, fu istituito il mercato settimanale del gioved\u00ec, da svolgersi in questa Piazza. Nel primo Novecento Piazza Cresti, l’unica esistente, era il centro di tutta la vita sociale e commerciale del paese: gli edifici che la circondavano ospitavano fondi commerciali e tutte le attivit\u00e0 artigianali indispensabili ai bisogni degli abitanti e dei viaggiatori, che qui si fermavano con carri, carrozze e merci.

The Latin name Tabernulae (small shop, tavern), from which Tavarnelle is derived , refers to the inns with stables for the change of horses, similar to those that are seen today in the area called the Ortone, along Via Roma, that hosted travelers since the medieval era. Located on the road connecting Florence and Siena, the village was constantly expanded for its strategic position and in 1822, in addition to the Royal Post for the exchange of horses, was established the weekly market on Thursday, to be held in this square. In the early twentieth century Piazza Cresti, the only existing one, was the center of all the social and commercial life of the town: the buildings that surrounded it housed commercial funds and all the handicraft activities indispensable to the needs of the inhabitants and travelers who stopped here with wagons, carriages and goods.

Nel paese non rimane nessun edificio medievale, a causa delle distruzioni e dei saccheggi a cui l’abitato era spesso sottoposto, essendo privo di stabili strutture difensive. Tuttavia alcuni edifici di Via Roma, tra i pi\u00f9 antichi del borgo, mostrano la struttura edilizia originaria con fondi commerciali al piano terreno e scale di collegamento con i piani superiori, tutti dotati di due aperture sul fronte principale. Tra il XVI e il XVII secolo la borghesia locale inizi\u00f2 a costruire lungo la Via anche alcuni edifici riecheggianti i palazzi cittadini: sono visibili due esempi di portali in bugnato secenteschi, facciate con finestre semi-inginocchiate e stemmi nobiliari. In the village there is no medieval building, due to the destruction and looting to which the town was often subjected, being devoid of stable defensive structures. However, some buildings of Via Roma, among the oldest in the village, show the original building structure with commercial property on the ground floor and stairs connecting the upper floors, all with two openings on the main front. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the local bourgeoisie began to build along the way some buildings echoing the city palaces: two examples of seventeenth-century rusticated portals, facades with semi-kneeling windows and noble coats of arms are visible.
