The village of Tavarnelle derives its name from the Latin Tabernulae, toponym that seems to indicate the village as a stopover on one of the minor roads that connected the Via Francigena to Via Volterrana. Its ancient origins are attested by numerous Roman finds in the neighborhood and by the ruins of a building, perhaps referable to the imperial era, which was near the Church of San Pietro in Bossolo. The town was developed from the union of several medieval rural villages: Tavarnelle, Borghetto – located along the road link that placed Florence in communication with the Via Francigena in Val d’Elsa – and Mocale, located along a path from the Via Francigena to the castles of Pogni and Marcialla and to the Via Volterrana. There are no clear traces of the medieval buildings, because of the frequent looting of the village,that lacked stable defensive structures. The importance of the village is confirmed by the Franciscans\u2019 construction of the convent of Borghetto in the first half of the thirteenth century.
