The church belonged in the past to the plover of San Pietro in Bossolo. Consecrated in 1001 by San Podio Vescovo di Firenze, at the end of the XIII century it was completely rebuilt in simple gothic forms and equipped with a bell tower. The two splendid bells, built in 1290 by a certain Magister Lorenzo, have recently been placed at the sides of the main entrance of the building. A tabernacle with a fresco depicting Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child, probably created by one of the artists who worked in the nearby Passignano Abbey, was built in the first half of the 15th century near the Romagliano bridge in Sambuca. In 1725 the Torelli family of Sambuca built a small building around the ancient shrine that protected the ancient image. The building has a hexagonal plan and a central door. At the sides there are small barred windows to allow pilgrims to \u00a0venerate the sacred image kept inside. The tabernacle was restored by Luigi Pagni Torelli in 1843.
