\nBadia a Passignano (1), the most well-known tourist destination rich in history and artistic heritage, is linked to the Vallombrosana Abbey and to the founder of its monastic order, San Giovanni Gualberto, buried here. The area around Badia a Passignano is a protected natural area rich in natural environments and also full of vineyards, which meet descending towards the village of Sambuca Val di Pesa (2). This place is historically important because there is the ancient “Roman” bridge of Ramagliano that allowed the transit through the river Pesa connecting Florence to Siena.
\nAfter crossing the bridge and the other part of the village we continue the itinerary, which follows the ancient route, and arrives first to the ancient Pieve di San Donato in Poggio (3) and then to the village that shows the appearance of the old castle. San Donato (4), which contains the bell tower, the Church of Santa Maria della Neve, the well and the Palazzo Malaspina (5), home to important exhibitions and events.
\nFrom the village of San Donato, coming out of one of the two gates (or the Florentine or Sienese one), you can reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietracupa (6) with a short journey. From here you can continue to get to the site of the Polifunctional Observatory of Chianti or return to Tavarnelle along the provincial ridge road that sweeps over the Pesa and Elsa valleys. Halfway between San Donato and the main town is the Church of Santa Maria al Morrocco (7), with the old convent, and after a while you can turn right to a dirt road in good condition that comes with a nice scenic hike on vineyards, olive groves and woods to the Pieve di San Pietro in Bossolo (8) and to the adjacent Museum of Sacred Art.
