The building is built in the place where according to tradition the Saint used to go to pray, and encloses the boulder on which St. John Gualberto lay down, suffering, suffering “da penosa ischiade” (sciatic nerve pain), as recalled by the plaque placed in the atrium. A first votive capital was built in this place around the rock in 1671, only to be demolished and rebuilt in larger forms two centuries later.
