Passignano, importante insediamento di origine carolingia, era sede di un antico monastero e di un piccolo borgo posti a guardia della via detta del Gardingo di Passignano che univa la Val di Pesa con la Val di Greve. L’insediamento altomedievale doveva essere costituito dalla parte attualmente occupata dagli edifici dell’abbazia su un’altura sovrastante la strada ed era probabilmente circondato da mura e da fossati. L’abbazia, accresciutasi, arriv\u00f2 ad occupare in breve tempo tutta la parte alta dell’antico castello ed il cassero inizi\u00f2 a svilupparsi in un nuovo borgo attorno alle mura, lungo la strada maestra. Ad uso dei sui abitanti si rese necessaria nel 1080 la costruzione di una nuova chiesa, poi intitolata a San Biagio.<\/p>\n

Passignano, an important settlement of Longobard origin, was the site of an ancient monastery and a small village guarding the way known as the Gardingo di Passignano which connected the Val di Pesa with the Val di Greve. The early medieval settlement consisted of the part currently occupied by the abbey buildings on a rise above the road and was probably surrounded by walls and ditches. The abbey grew and soon occupied the high part of the ancient castle, so a new village developed around the walls, along the main road.
