Torre dell’Arengo is located over Palazzo del Podest\u00e0. This area has always been a central point for the city trade, as here there used to be a lot of sellers, clients, beggars and even cheaters. Under the big vault, notary stands and the gallows could be found as well.<\/p>\n
If you look at Palazzo Re Enzo from the centre of the square, the tower can be seen. The tower has never been resistant because of its thin walls and not deep basis. In the beginning, in 1200, it was just a little raised part. Torre Galluzzi is located in Piazza Galvani and it is part of the so-called triad of the medieval skyscrapers of Bologna, along with Torre Prendiparte and Torre Azzoguidi, standing in another area of the city centre. Even if they are far from each other, the three towers all belonged to a guelph family, that is to say in favour of the Pope, and it is not by chance they are all located in crucial areas in this respect: Torre Azzoguidi and Torre Prendiparte can be found next to the archibishop’s seat, and the Galluzzi Towers next to the first municipal seat, once known as Complesso di Sant’Ambrogio. Galluzzi Tower is still recognized for being tall (30 metres, surely reduced than the beginning) and strong: the tower’s walls are so thick that no fire or attack have ever destroyed them, its socility has been for centuries synonym for power and richness. This tower is particularly interesting also for the area in which it is located: inside a place once known as \u201ccuria\u201d where the residence, the gentle chapel and the towers belonging to one family only, can be found.<\/p>\n
Now the ground floor of the tower hosts a book shop from which the original walls, now renovated, can be seen. On the contrary, from outside the shop, the original door (the one that opens at more than 6 metres from the ground). On the one hand its pointed arch shape shows the paryail modernity of the Tower, as the previous towers all have squared or circular doors and windows, stylistically older. On the other hand, the floor was evidently ruined because it was used (as it seems) as a connection point between the tower and the wooden house next to it.<\/p>\n
Galluzzi Tower was built in 1257, and was originally taller than its current 30 metres. The original entrance was on a floor about 10 metres above ground level, and the Galluzzi family used to enter it through a window located halfway up the tower, using mobile wooden bridges that stuck out from their houses. The thickness of the tower\u2019s walls \u2013 sometimes more than 3 metres – and its remarkable height served to keep a watchful eye over the surrounding houses.<\/p>\n

Not far from Torre Prendiparte, there is Torre Guidozagni, located in Sant’Al\u00f2 square. If you pass it and then turn back, the peculiar perspective recalls the towers Asinelli and Garisenda.<\/p>\n

The two towers\u00a0Garisenda and Asinelli are the traditional symbol of Bologna, strategically standing\u00a0where the old Aemilian way entered the town. Today they stand right in the middle of Porta Ravegnana square, but this does not correspond to their original layout, which\u00a0 included wooden buildings all around their base and hanging passageways.\u00a0Made in masonry work, as very few other buildings at that time, they had very important military functions (signalling and defence), beside representing with their imposing heights the social prestige of the noble families that owned them. In the late 12th century, at least one hundred towers dotted the town’s skyline, but today only twenty have survived the ravages of fire, warfare and lightning. Quite recently, the statue of San Petronio made by Gabriele Brunelli in 1670, has been\u00a0 placed back under the towers, after being removed in 1871 for “traffic reasons”.<\/p>\n
The Asinelli Tower was built between 1109 – 19 by the Asinelli family, and in the following century it was acquired by the Municipality of Bologna.\u00a0 It is 97.20 metres high with a drop of 2.23 metres and an inner staircase of 498 steps completed in 1684. The plinth is surrounded by a small ‘stronghold’ built in 1488 to house the guards . Today, its portico hosts\u00a0 a few craft shops and ateliers,to recall the merchants’ trade of the Medieval ‘mercato di mezzo’.<\/p>\n
The Garisenda Tower, built around the same period , is much smaller (47 metres) with a steeper drop (3.22 m) due to an early and more marked subsidence of soil and foundation. Dante, who saw the tower before the process started, compared it to a leaning Anteo in the 31st Canto of his Inferno. In mid 14th century the tower had to be lowered. Accursi Tower, also known as the Clock Tower, is located in Piazza Maggiore. The owner of the tower was Accursio, a young man who had moved from Florence to Bologna to study law. After becoming an important jurist, he decided to have his own house built: the building was very big and included both a school, whose portico looked out on the square, and a corner tower.<\/p>\n
The tower was added later to Accursio’s house and after his death, it was bought by the growing Municipality of Bologna. On the fa\u00e7ade of the building, a huge mechanical clock was added in 1444. Its initial aim was to mark daytime, mainly midday, but since 1451 it has also marked nighttime. In order to build the clock, the tower was partly modified and a little tower was added. After being seriously renovated between 1885 and 1887 by Raffaele Faccioli, the Renaissance parapet was removed ans replaced by a group of bricks considered to be more suitable for the new medieval aspect of the building. Torre Agresti is located in Piazza Galileo, among modern buildings. Piazza Galileo was built after the demolition of some nearby buildings between the 20s and 30s and it was enlarged after the bombings of WWII that considerbly destroyed this area of the city.<\/p>\n
On the night of 2 August 1641 a fire destroyed the two buildings surrounding the tower and the ground floor shop. The fire flared up from another shop and continued for several days as it was poked by a storm. People panicked also because at the time the nearby Lapi Tower was used as a warehouse for gun powder and cartriges. Nothing exploded and the Agresti Tower didn’t collapse. But the Spanish College, which had acquired it a few centuries before, had to undergo important works of reconstruction: the tower was adjusted to the surrounding buildings: it was reduced to the current 20metres through the construction of a turret and the typical Bolognese selenite blocks were removed. It was partially hidden by those walls for three centuries.
\nThe renovation of the tower didn’t undermin its stability and it also resisted after being bombed in 1945. Palazzo della Mercanzia is located in the area where the old city customs used to be. On its left, the ancient palaces with wooden porticoes may be found (they recall the medieval aspect of Bologna) and from there, Torre Alberici (Alberici Tower) may be seen. The Alberici family built the tower in the 13th century. Unfortunately, its height (27 metres) has been hidden for a long time by a big and obscuring building. It was only in 1928 that the nearby houses were renovated thus giving the Tower the old visibility.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, at present the evocative shop with wooden enclosures may be seen as well. According to some historians, it is the oldest one in Bologna, dating back to 1273. The walls of the tower were impoverished to make the inner area bigger than before. This let us think that the tower was even higher in the beginning. It may be possible that it was later reduced to make it lighter, when also its peak was turned into a turret. Torre Azzoguidi – Azzoguidi Tower (also known as Altabella Tower) is located in Via Altabella (the street was given this name because of the presence of the tower). It is 61 metres high and it’s prossible it was even higher in the past (its fa\u00e7ade seems to have been designed to counterbalance the height of the building).<\/p>\n
Azzoguidi Tower is an example of the typical medieval bolognese towers: square-shaped base, ten rows of plaster parallelepipeds, an ancient pointed arch door on the ground floor and a little opening leading to the nearby flat (in Via Caduti di Cefalonia, this room was later used as a little chapel whose frescoes were painted by the 15th century Bolognese painters).<\/p>\n
From their towers, not far from each other, the Azzoguidi and the Prendiparte families used to watch over St. Peter’s Church and at the same time to safeguard the power of the Guelphs dominating the city between the 13th and the 14th century. Their role was not to fight but to rule over Bologna.<\/p>\n
In 1500 the tower was acquired by the Muzzarelli family and it was given the structure of all the other towers in Bologna: used as a house on the first and second floors, empty upstairs and the seat of a shop on the ground floor. When the shop was built, the tower underwent some awkward works: the walls were empoverished thus undermining the tower’s stability and the little entry door was enlarged thus severely altering one side of the tower’s fa\u00e7ade (the side in Via Altabella). In 1951 it was carefully renovated in order to solve these problems. Thanks to these renovation works, today’s aspect of the tower is more similar to the original than during the Renaissance. Torre Carrari is characterized by a thin and basic structure. It is 22 metres high, and\u00a0 it may be considered as a Tower House, built by the Carrari family between the 12th and the 13th century. The tower houses represented the best part of the medieval architecture. They were a sort of compromise between the wooden and the stonebuilt houses, thus combining stability, cleanliness and both structural and housing security.<\/p>\n
The Carrari family originally owned great part of the area where now Via de’ Toschi, Via Marchesana and Via Foscherari are located. In this area the family also had a gentle church and a house including a tower and a tower house (the tower house is the only thing now visible). Later, the church and the tower house were acquired by the Foscherari Family, whose name was given to the today’s street.<\/p>\n
In 1484 the little tower was bought (1.200 lire) and in the 18th century it was inherited by the Fabbriceria di San Petronio (Fabbriceria was a company whose purpose was to preserve holy places, such as churches). The foundation was born in 1390 to manage first the construction and then the maintenance of the church of S. Petronio. It also managed its finances, whose main income was related to inheritance (in case there was nobody else who could take it). In order to see Torre Lambertini, we suggest you to look at Palazzo Re Enzo or Palazzo del Podest\u00e0 from Via Rizzoli, near Via Caduti di Cefalonia. From here, Torre Lambertini may be seen.<\/p>\n
It is a tower house, bought in 1294 from the Municipality of Bologna which wanted to enlarge its area, formed by palatium vetus (Palazzo del Podest\u00e0) and palatium novum (Palazzo Re Enzo). The Lambertini family was an important one in the conflict for the control of the city between Guelphs and Ghibellines. The Lambertini family (Guelphs) contributed to banish the Lambertazzi family (Ghibellines) in 1274 after 40 days of fight. It also seems that they cought King Enzo of Sardinia (son of the emperor Federico II) who spent the rest of his life imprisoned in the palace (later named after him). At present, the only thing that recalls the existence of the Lambertini family in Bologna is their tower. The turret, the doors, the windows and the entrance on the ground floor were built in different periods. The little door with the balcony and the littlest window (on the east side of the tower) should be part of the original building. The big door and the biggest windows are more modern and are supposed to have been built when the Tower was given to the Capitano del Popolo (the city judiciary) in 1255. Torre Lapi (the Lapi Tower) is part of the Municipal building and it doesn’t seem to be a gentle tower. Some scholars suppose it is part of the ruins of Porta Nova, one of the ancient walls that surrounded the city during the High Middle Ages. The tower was supposed to be located in the first circle. It was originally built as a passage, then the Lapi family bougth it from the Laigoni family and had it rearranged for personal needs. In the 15th century, they sold the tower for 400 lire to the Municipality of Bologna that wanted to enlarge the municipal building.<\/p>\n
Later, it became part of the Municipal wall (it didn’t differ a lot from what we may see today). It was used as a residence by many people: some Dominican monks, a painter, a family of beccai (the term was used in Bologna to refer to butchers. The origin of this name derives from the Becco, the male goat, the kind of meat people used to eat at the time). Their presence in this area wasn’t accidental: from the mid-14th century the entire via porta Nova, now known as Via IV Novembre, hosted people who sold meat, once located in Piazza Maggiore. The new owners, the butchers, decided to change the features of the base of the tower, by opening their shop. But in 1505 the members of the Bolognese Senate decided to remove all the stands and shops that bothered them and make the whole area dirty. Probably, the explosion of the area during the 1641 fire was avoided thanks to this decision. The fire burst in the area where Agresti Tower is located and threathened the surrounding area as well.<\/p>\n
During the napoleonic period the tower was almost halved, from around 30 metres to 18, to become part to the rest of the walls. Torre Prendiparte, also known as Coronata Tower, was built in the 12th century by the guelph Prendiparte family as a means of defence. It is 60 meters high, thus being the second one in terms of height after the Asinelli Tower. It was supposed to be even higher in the beginning and it seems it was then reduced for some obscure reason.<\/p>\n
Thanks to recent restoration works, the 12 floors of the structure are now totally accessible. This tower, along with the others is one of the oldest buildings still preserved.
\nThanks to the typical “Bolognese” red and solid bricks and to the strong selenite blocks the tower looks like an impregnable medieval fortress.<\/p>\n
The Prendiparte Tower was built on behalf of the powerful Cardinal Paleotti, and was contended for centuries. First, It was used as an extension of the Archdiocesan Seminary. Later, the Seminary moved to another location and in 1751 Cardinal Lambertini, Pope Benedict XIV, used it as the Archbishop’s prison for crimes against religion or, Christian ethics.<\/p>\n
In the rooms of the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, once used as cells, there are still some reddish inscriptions and graffiti (mainly lamentations and allegories, now visible thanks to recent renovation works), written through the use of some pieces of the bricks that formed the tower.<\/p>\n
Instead, the first three floors were turned into a house at the end of 18th century when the Tower was seized by Napoleon’s troops. The most recent changes may be traced back to that period, when some big windows were built so to create a better place to live.

In order to have the most striking view of the tower, we suggest taking via San Simone from via Oberdan and turning into vicolo Mandria on your right.<\/p>\n
Here,\u00a0Torre Uguzzoni (the Uguzzoni Tower) stands out in a corner where time seems to have stopped. The thirty-two-metre tall tower has a wide base covered with selenite blocks and a 16th-17th century turret on the top.<\/p>\n
The ancient door with its selenite lintel has a pointed arch made of bricks. The unusual way windows are arranged (one round arch window on the left and another one in the middle) leads us to think that this was a tower-house.<\/p>\n
Below the window at the first floor level five putlog holes that held the wooden beams of the hoarding complete the picture of one of the most characteristic corners of medieval Bologna.<\/p>\n
