The Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore was built by the Hermits of St. Augustine between 1267 and 1315.
\nThe styles which characterize it are different: Romanesque architecture outside, Gothic style in the sacristy and in some chapels and late Renaissance in the nave.
\nOf particular interest is the Bentivoglio Chapel, one of the most important works of the early Bolognese Renaissance.

Among the most successful examples of architectural redevelopment of historic buildings, Corte Isolani is an impressive covered passage connecting two important streets of the historic center of Bologna: Strada Maggiore and via Santo Stefano. It is known as the \u201csquare of seven churches\u201d because inside the basilica of Santo Stefano lurk many other churches, as in a matryoshka doll. The palace that forms the western flank of Piazza Maggiore has been home to the Bologna city council since 1336. Palazzo dei Banchi was the last building built in Piazza Maggiore. Palazzo dei Notai is one of the historic buildings that overlook Piazza Maggiore and just beside it there is Via D’Azeglio, a famous pedestrian street where you can stroll watching the luxury shops.
\nThis palace was the ancient headquarters of the Notaries’ Society, in fact, on its facade it is possible to admire a coat of arms featuring three inkpots with goose pens. It was originally built in 1287 but over the centuries it has undergone several phases: for example, the part of the palace facing the Basilica of San Petronio was enlarged under the direction of Berto Cavalletto and Lorenzo da Bagnomarino, while the one overlooking Palazzo D’Accursio was rebuilt by Bartolomeo Fioravanti in about 1437.

Bologna’s hulking Gothic basilica is the world’s 15th-largest church. Work began on it in 1390, but it was never finished and still today its main facade remains incomplete. Designed in 1656 by Gian Cassini and Domenico Guglielmi, this was instrumental in discovering the anomalies of the Julian calendar and led to the creation of the leap year.
\nOriginal plans for the basilica were to construct a church larger than Rome’s St Peter’s, but in 1561 Pope Pius IV blocked construction by commissioning a new university on the basilica’s eastern flank.
