{"type":"FeatureCollection","features":[{"type":"Feature","properties":{"id":428,"name":"Basilica di San Domenico","description":"<p>Built in 1238, this basilica shelters the remains of San Domenico, founder of the Dominican order.<br \/>\nAlong the right aisle, the Cappella di San Domenico houses the saint&#8217;s elaborate sarcophagus, designed by Nicola Pisano and later added to by a host of artists.<br \/>\nMichelangelo carved the angel on the right of the altar when he was only 19, and Mozart when spent a month at Bologna&#8217;s music academy, occasionally played the church&#8217;s organ.<br \/>\nGuided tours available: participation with offer, reservation appreciated but not necessary.<\/p>\n<p>One of these images is dated\u00a01868. Note that the church still has a porch that will be demolished during the restoration, during which the missing rose window was also rebuilt. On the right side, the building that welcomed the Pious Schools, that is the elementary ones of the early nineteenth century. Work began on it in 1390, but it was never finished and still today its main facade remains incomplete. Inside, look out for the huge sundial that stretches 67.7m down the eastern aisle. Designed in 1656 by Gian Cassini and Domenico Guglielmi, this was instrumental in discovering the anomalies of the Julian calendar and led to the creation of the leap year.<br \/>\nOriginal plans for the basilica were to construct a church larger than Rome&#8217;s St Peter&#8217;s, but in 1561 Pope Pius IV blocked construction by commissioning a new university on the basilica&#8217;s eastern flank. Desired by Father Andrea Manfredi of Faenza and Master Antonio of Vincenzo, it presents a Gothic architecture of great impact especially in the three inner naves.<br \/>\nInside there are many art works, including those of Cimabue, Michelangelo Montorsoli and Vitale from Bologna.<br \/>\nThe Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi has a long musical tradition, in the seventeenth century there were four organs and today there is a musical chapel next to the sacristy.<br \/>\nClassical music concerts are often hosted throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its exasperated lightness the Servi portico has a long history of collapses. Ancient chronicles report that in the fifteenth century two arches collapsed and blamed a baker who used the attic as a warehouse; evidently the vaults were not made to hold the weight of so many sacks of flour.<\/p>\n<p>A relatively recent collapse of the 1920s is documented with photographs. That time the porch collapsed over a passerby, a certain Luigi Sambo postal officer, and killed him. After this fact that piece of porch was renovated. Currently a column of via guerrazzi has been propped up because it presents a crack. The left part just rebuilt after the German command exploded an unexploded bomb instead of removing it, thus collapsing a part of the fourteenth century building. On the right, the balcony from which the notices and sentences of the mercantile court were read, sentences that sometimes were deaths for the bankrupt, because the bankruptcy was assimilated to theft. The photo was taken from the top of the Asinelli tower with a powerful telephoto lens.<\/p>\n<p>In of these pictures we can see the tower of the Riccadonna family, demolished together with other lower ones, following a dirty speculation after the great war, despite the opposition of the protagonists of the culture of the time, including D&#8217;Annunzio. Enchanted.<\/p>\n<p>The heads of Palazzo Bolognini \/ Isolani have been watching the square for five centuries. In one of the photos you can see Bolognesi of other times look curious from the portico of Palazzo Bolognini \/ Isolani in Santo Stefano square and the\u00a0square as it appeared after the restoration. Note that on the left side of the church there was still the statue of San Pietro, now inside, which was placed by the friars in the fifteenth century when they spread the rumor of having found the San Pietro\u2019s tomb.
