Built in 1238, this basilica shelters the remains of San Domenico, founder of the Dominican order.
\nAlong the right aisle, the Cappella di San Domenico houses the saint’s elaborate sarcophagus, designed by Nicola Pisano and later added to by a host of artists.
\nMichelangelo carved the angel on the right of the altar when he was only 19, and Mozart when spent a month at Bologna’s music academy, occasionally played the church’s organ.

One of these images is dated\u00a01868. Note that the church still has a porch that will be demolished during the restoration, during which the missing rose window was also rebuilt. On the right side, the building that welcomed the Pious Schools, that is the elementary ones of the early nineteenth century. The Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore was built by the Hermits of St. Augustine between 1267 and 1315.
\nThe styles which characterize it are different: Romanesque architecture outside, Gothic style in the sacristy and in some chapels and late Renaissance in the nave.
\nOf particular interest is the Bentivoglio Chapel, one of the most important works of the early Bolognese Renaissance.

The Church of San Martino faces the square of the same name and it is flanked by Via Oberdan, a pretty street that connects via rizzoli with the university area.
\nHeadquarters of the Carmelite Order since the 13th century, it has been built in the first half of the 14th century and it is characterized by a Gothic style with Romanesque influences.
\nInside, there are Renaissance chapels that house important paintings. Bologna’s hulking Gothic basilica is the world’s 15th-largest church. Work began on it in 1390, but it was never finished and still today its main facade remains incomplete. Inside, look out for the huge sundial that stretches 67.7m down the eastern aisle. Designed in 1656 by Gian Cassini and Domenico Guglielmi, this was instrumental in discovering the anomalies of the Julian calendar and led to the creation of the leap year.
\nOriginal plans for the basilica were to construct a church larger than Rome’s St Peter’s, but in 1561 Pope Pius IV blocked construction by commissioning a new university on the basilica’s eastern flank. This enchanting church overlooks Strada Maggiore and welcomes its visitors in an airy portico embellished with marble columns. Desired by Father Andrea Manfredi of Faenza and Master Antonio of Vincenzo, it presents a Gothic architecture of great impact especially in the three inner naves.
\nInside there are many art works, including those of Cimabue, Michelangelo Montorsoli and Vitale from Bologna.
\nThe Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi has a long musical tradition, in the seventeenth century there were four organs and today there is a musical chapel next to the sacristy.
\nClassical music concerts are often hosted throughout the year.<\/p>\n
Due to its exasperated lightness the Servi portico has a long history of collapses. Ancient chronicles report that in the fifteenth century two arches collapsed and blamed a baker who used the attic as a warehouse; evidently the vaults were not made to hold the weight of so many sacks of flour.<\/p>\n
A relatively recent collapse of the 1920s is documented with photographs. That time the porch collapsed over a passerby, a certain Luigi Sambo postal officer, and killed him. After this fact that piece of porch was renovated. Currently a column of via guerrazzi has been propped up because it presents a crack. This sleepy and enchanted botanic garden, supervised by the University of Bologna, lies between two busy streets as the Viale Carlo Berti Pichat and via irnerio.
\nFounded in 1568 by Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605), this place is a green oasis in the middle of the University area.
\nBotanic Garden but also Herbarium, one of the oldest in Europe. It safeguards roughly 130,000 dried plants collected from the sixteenth century.

St. Peter’s Cathedral is the most important place of worship in the city, where the archdiocese is located, in the heart of the historic center, just a few steps from Piazza Maggiore and the Basilica of San Petronio.
\nIt was probably built at the beginning of the Christian era but the first testimonies date back to the X century.
\nThe belfry of this impressive cathedral is the second for Bologna’s height (m. 70) and hosts the largest bell that can be played respecting the Bolognese tradition.
\nThe actual appearance dates back to 1605 and it is the result of the work of three architects: Floriano Ambrosini, Alfonso Torreggiani and Cosimo Morelli. Unfortunately, because of the renovation, it lost its previous Roman-Gothic style. Among the most successful examples of architectural redevelopment of historic buildings, Corte Isolani is an impressive covered passage connecting two important streets of the historic center of Bologna: Strada Maggiore and via Santo Stefano. Otherwise called Palazzo della Mercanzia or Palace of the Carrobbio, this loggia overlooks the square that once hosted a large market. Between the end of the 14th century to 18th, in fact, it was used as a trade forum.
\nSince 1797, until today, it became the headquarter of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Crafts.
\nThe Palazzo della Mercanzia, with its diversity of style, welcomes passers-by under his porch from which they can have a privileged view of the Asinelli Tower.
\nIn addition, this building has another important role, carefully guarding some original recipes of dishes such as Lasagne and rag\u00f9.<\/p>\n
Mercanzia in a 1940s photo. The left part just rebuilt after the German command exploded an unexploded bomb instead of removing it, thus collapsing a part of the fourteenth century building. On the right, the balcony from which the notices and sentences of the mercantile court were read, sentences that sometimes were deaths for the bankrupt, because the bankruptcy was assimilated to theft. The photo was taken from the top of the Asinelli tower with a powerful telephoto lens.<\/p>\n
In of these pictures we can see the tower of the Riccadonna family, demolished together with other lower ones, following a dirty speculation after the great war, despite the opposition of the protagonists of the culture of the time, including D’Annunzio. The palace that forms the western flank of Piazza Maggiore has been home to the Bologna city council since 1336. A salad of architectural styles, it owes much of its current look to makeovers in the 15th and 16th centuries. On the 2nd floor you’ll find the palazzo\u2019’s Collezioni Comunali d’Arte with its interesting collection of 13th- to 19th-century paintings, sculpture and furniture.<\/p>\n
The statue of Pope Gregory XIII, the Bolognese prelate responsible for the Gregorian calendar, was placed above the main portal in 1580, while inside, Donato Bramante’s 16th-century staircase was designed to allow horse-drawn carriages to ride directly up to the 1st floor.<\/p>\n

Palazzo dei Banchi was the last building built in Piazza Maggiore. Designed by Jacopo Barozzi in the second half of the sixteenth century, its purpose was to hide the narrow and lively streets of the market. Palazzo dei Notai is one of the historic buildings that overlook Piazza Maggiore and just beside it there is Via D’Azeglio, a famous pedestrian street where you can stroll watching the luxury shops.
\nThis palace was the ancient headquarters of the Notaries’ Society, in fact, on its facade it is possible to admire a coat of arms featuring three inkpots with goose pens. It was originally built in 1287 but over the centuries it has undergone several phases: for example, the part of the palace facing the Basilica of San Petronio was enlarged under the direction of Berto Cavalletto and Lorenzo da Bagnomarino, while the one overlooking Palazzo D’Accursio was rebuilt by Bartolomeo Fioravanti in about 1437.

Dating to the 13th century, the Palazzo del Podest\u00e0 was the original residence of Bologna’s chief magistrate.

It is known as the \u201csquare of seven churches\u201d because inside the basilica of Santo Stefano lurk many other churches, as in a matryoshka doll. The unmistakable cobbled floor makes unique and suggestive this square; even more so during summer afternoons, when it fills up with people enjoying the long days with a drink at one of the restaurants or reading a book in the shade of his porch.
\nOn the second Saturday and Sunday of each month, old vinyls and antiques are put on display during the antiques market that is held in this square, next to pastry shops, beautiful bars and within a walking distance of two towers.
\nA place with great hidden gems: casa Berti which preserves frescoes of Gaetano Gandolfi, Palazzo Isolani and Corte Isolani which leads directly to Strada Maggiore, Palazzo Bolognini Amorini Salina.
\nPiazza Santo Stefano is romantic, lovers often contemplate the atmosphere drinking a glass of wine in a tavern opens until late at night. It is a place in the middle, between the University area and a middle-class neighbourhood such as Giardini Margherita and san Mamolo. Enchanted.<\/p>\n
The heads of Palazzo Bolognini \/ Isolani have been watching the square for five centuries. In one of the photos you can see Bolognesi of other times look curious from the portico of Palazzo Bolognini \/ Isolani in Santo Stefano square and the\u00a0square as it appeared after the restoration. Note that on the left side of the church there was still the statue of San Pietro, now inside, which was placed by the friars in the fifteenth century when they spread the rumor of having found the San Pietro\u2019s tomb. This fact did not please the pope who ordered to fill the church with topsoil to avoid pilgrimages and demonstrations of faith in regard to that lie, because everyone knows that the tomb of San Pietro is in Rome.<\/p>\n

The name “Villa delle Rose” has its origins in the garden and numerous varieties of plants that surround this historic residence.
\nWe are in via Saragozza, an important and characteristic street that hosts the longest portico of the city. In this evocative context, a long staircase guarded by statues of two lions and set among trees skilfully pruned takes us inside this hidden gem.
\nA villa from the second half of the 18th century, originally the residence of the Cella family.
\nIn 1916, thanks to its last owner Nerina Armandi d\u00e8 Piccoli, it was donated to the city of Bologna. At a later time, it became an exhibition space of the Gallery of Modern Art.

Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) was built between 1563 and 1566 by the Flemish sculptor Giambologna.<\/p>\n
It is a symbol of the power of the Pope: he ruled the world like Neptune ruled the seas. At the feet of the statue there are four little angels.
