The ancient Clavature street was one of the main streets of the city. Here in 1626, a killer tried to kill Count Filippo Pepoli, ambassador of Bologna to the Holy See, to pocket a fabulous reward. Piazza dei Celestini was the old main square, before the construction of the current one, Piazza Maggiore. It was a square also at the time of the Romans, because here there was the forum, so that more or less recent excavations have returned ancient artifacts, such as the famous bust, attributed to Nerone, who was the benefactor of Bologna to have it rebuilt after a fire had destroyed it.<\/p>\n
Since five centuries the Madonna di Nicol\u00f2 dell’Arca watches over the square. The great sculptor was buried in the church of the Celestini as a plaque on the outside recalls.<\/p>\n

Walking around Bologna suddenly appear the immense San Petronio, built in honor of the city’s patron saint.\u00a0Its incomplete and scenographic fa\u00e7ade is mentioned in many songs of Italian singer-songwriters and it was born as a meeting place for the mercantile exchange.\u00a0This basilica was built in the historic centre, in order to give prominence to the seat of the City Government; it was only the beginning of many architectural and social metamorphosis, began in the 13th century.<\/p>\n
There are many historic buildings that overlook this main square. Palazzo Re Enzo \u201cgreets\u201d the statue of Neptune and the beautiful Sala Borsa library, next to it there is Palazzo del Podest\u00e0, while to the West side of the square there is Palazzo dei Notai and Palazzo Comunale, also known as Palazzo D’accursio.<\/p>\n
Teenagers, families, young street performers who play without worries… Everybody participating in this spontaneous show that becomes even more charming under the moon, when all is quiet or when, during the summer, it takes place \u201cCinema sotto le stelle\u201d, the famous festival that offers to its audience free movies on a big screen under the stars.<\/p>\n
In the past, horses and mules were an everyday thing in the square. A curious sixteenth-century chronicle tells us how one day a runaway horse even entered San Petronio and couldn\u2019t send it away.\u00a0This nineteenth-century photo shows the change of horses that pulled trams before the invention of electric current. Once, the street of via Rizzoli was the track where every year an important race (Palio) was run. The race turned at right angles to Piazza del Nettuno. It is known as the \u201csquare of seven churches\u201d because inside the basilica of Santo Stefano lurk many other churches, as in a matryoshka doll. The unmistakable cobbled floor makes unique and suggestive this square; even more so during summer afternoons, when it fills up with people enjoying the long days with a drink at one of the restaurants or reading a book in the shade of his porch.
\nOn the second Saturday and Sunday of each month, old vinyls and antiques are put on display during the antiques market that is held in this square, next to pastry shops, beautiful bars and within a walking distance of two towers.
\nA place with great hidden gems: casa Berti which preserves frescoes of Gaetano Gandolfi, Palazzo Isolani and Corte Isolani which leads directly to Strada Maggiore, Palazzo Bolognini Amorini Salina.
\nPiazza Santo Stefano is romantic, lovers often contemplate the atmosphere drinking a glass of wine in a tavern opens until late at night. It is a place in the middle, between the University area and a middle-class neighbourhood such as Giardini Margherita and san Mamolo. Enchanted.<\/p>\n
The heads of Palazzo Bolognini \/ Isolani have been watching the square for five centuries. In one of the photos you can see Bolognesi of other times look curious from the portico of Palazzo Bolognini \/ Isolani in Santo Stefano square and the\u00a0square as it appeared after the restoration. Note that on the left side of the church there was still the statue of San Pietro, now inside, which was placed by the friars in the fifteenth century when they spread the rumor of having found the San Pietro\u2019s tomb. This fact did not please the pope who ordered to fill the church with topsoil to avoid pilgrimages and demonstrations of faith in regard to that lie, because everyone knows that the tomb of San Pietro is in Rome.<\/p>\n
Wanted people often took refuge in the churchyard of Santo because in these religious places the police could not perform arrests.<\/p>\n

These vintage photos show the Bonaccorsi arch, which begins the portico of San Luca, and the exterior of Porta Saragozza, almost completely rebuilt at the end of the nineteenth century in the old fake style with questionable scenic effect.\u00a0One of the images shows the gate, the moat and the demolition of the buildings on the inside.<\/p>\n
Via Senzanome, crossing via Saragozza, has the narrowest portico of the city (95 cm). As shown in the photo there is space just for one person, not more. This street has a strange name which means \u201cwithout a name\u201d; it would seem to be the result of the euphemistic corruption of “sozzonome” (dirty name), to avoid the real name of the street that sounded obscene. But no one has ever been able to specify what would have been the less than decent term to avoid. Some rumors claim that the term was “rub tits”, just as a consequence of the reduced width of the porch. Otherwise called Palazzo della Mercanzia or Palace of the Carrobbio, this loggia overlooks the square that once hosted a large market. Between the end of the 14th century to 18th, in fact, it was used as a trade forum.
\nSince 1797, until today, it became the headquarter of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Crafts.
\nThe Palazzo della Mercanzia, with its diversity of style, welcomes passers-by under his porch from which they can have a privileged view of the Asinelli Tower.
\nIn addition, this building has another important role, carefully guarding some original recipes of dishes such as Lasagne and rag\u00f9.<\/p>\n
Mercanzia in a 1940s photo. The left part just rebuilt after the German command exploded an unexploded bomb instead of removing it, thus collapsing a part of the fourteenth century building. On the right, the balcony from which the notices and sentences of the mercantile court were read, sentences that sometimes were deaths for the bankrupt, because the bankruptcy was assimilated to theft. The photo was taken from the top of the Asinelli tower with a powerful telephoto lens.<\/p>\n
In of these pictures we can see the tower of the Riccadonna family, demolished together with other lower ones, following a dirty speculation after the great war, despite the opposition of the protagonists of the culture of the time, including D’Annunzio. This enchanting church overlooks Strada Maggiore and welcomes its visitors in an airy portico embellished with marble columns. Desired by Father Andrea Manfredi of Faenza and Master Antonio of Vincenzo, it presents a Gothic architecture of great impact especially in the three inner naves.
\nInside there are many art works, including those of Cimabue, Michelangelo Montorsoli and Vitale from Bologna.
\nThe Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi has a long musical tradition, in the seventeenth century there were four organs and today there is a musical chapel next to the sacristy.
\nClassical music concerts are often hosted throughout the year.<\/p>\n
Due to its exasperated lightness the Servi portico has a long history of collapses. Ancient chronicles report that in the fifteenth century two arches collapsed and blamed a baker who used the attic as a warehouse; evidently the vaults were not made to hold the weight of so many sacks of flour.<\/p>\n
A relatively recent collapse of the 1920s is documented with photographs. That time the porch collapsed over a passerby, a certain Luigi Sambo postal officer, and killed him. After this fact that piece of porch was renovated. Currently a column of via guerrazzi has been propped up because it presents a crack. Questa incantevole basilica del 1346 affaccia su Strada Maggiore ed accoglie i suoi visitatori in un arioso quadriportico abbellito da colonne in marmo. Voluta da padre Andrea Manfredi da Faenza e mastro Antonio di Vincenzo, presenta un’architettura gotica di grande impatto soprattutto nelle tre navate interne.

Among the most successful examples of architectural redevelopment of historic buildings, Corte Isolani is an impressive covered passage connecting two important streets of the historic center of Bologna: Strada Maggiore and via Santo Stefano. This 15th-century complex, transformed into a commercial and social itinerary, was inaugurated in 1995, later the renovation conceived by the architect Marina Di Mottola.
