It was originally called \u201cCamuggi\u201d, often translated as \u201chouses of wives\u201d, referring to the sea captains, sailors and fishermen’s wives, who traditionally spent their time at home while their husbands were out at sea. Complesso dalle origini ancora avvolte nel mistero, si racconta in questa baia avesse trovato rifugio Prospero, vescovo di Tarragona in fuga dalla Spagna invasa dagli arabi e che qui avesse costruito una chiesa per conservarvi le reliquie del martire Fruttuoso. La cupola bizantina, inglobata nella torre ottagonale, in corrispondenza di una sorgente perenne, risalirebbe invece al X secolo, mentre a partire dal \u2018400 le sorti dell\u2019abbazia iniziano a intrecciarsi con le vicende della famiglia Doria, che promosse diversi interventi di restauro nel corso del tempo.<\/p>\n

The origins of the Abbey of Saint Fruttuoso are still shrouded in mystery. It is said that, while fleeing the Arab invasion in Spain, the Bishop of Tarragona Prosperus found shelter in this exact bay. He then decided to build a church where to preserve the relic of the martyr Saint Fruttuoso. The Byzantine dome topping the octagonal tower, marking the spot where a perpetual spring flows, should be dated to the 10th century. From the 15th century, the fate of the abbey starts being entangled to that of the Doria Family, who promoted many restoration works across the following centuries.<\/p>\n

Ai tempi dell\u2019Impero Romano pare che il Golfo del Tigullio, sul quale si affaccia l\u2019antico borgo, fosse popolato dai delfini, per questo fu chiamato da Plinio il Vecchio Portus Delphini.
