Imbarcazione tipica del Tigullio particolarmente presente a Sestri Levante il cui inizio potrebbe risalire al basso Medio Evo con l’avvento della vela latina probabilmente portata dagli Arabi. E’ stata sempre utilizzata come mezzo di trasporto commerciale per il piccolo cabotaggio concepita per poter essere varata ed alata sulle spiagge vista la mancanza di porti e la politica della Repubblica Genovese di non consentire altri porti in concorrenza con quello di Genova.<\/p>\n

Le dimensioni erano tali da garantire la massima capacit\u00e0 di trasporto compatibilmente con la possibilit\u00e0 di trascinamento sulle spiagge con argani a braccia. Venivano costruiti anche direttamente sulla spiaggia<\/p>\n

The leudo, traditionally the typical boat of the Tigullio Gulf, was particularly prevalent in Sestri Levante and Riva Trigoso. The leudo dates back to the late Middle Ages and likely evolved to suit the Lateen sail, which was probably brought to Liguria by the Arabs. The boats were used mainly to transport cargo. Because the Republic of Genoa forbade construction of Rivera ports that would compete with the Port of Genoa, there was a scarcity of ports in the Tigullio Gulf.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the leudo was designed to be kept on the beach and towed along the sand for entering and exiting the water. The dimensions of the boat ensured the maximum transport capacity compatible with moving the boat along the beach with winches. Sede di una delle prime comunit\u00e0 parrocchiali di Sestri Levante fu edificata, secondo alcune fonti storiche, intorno al 1151 nei pressi del promontorio sestrese – detto “Isola” – molto probabilmente su un preesistente edificio di culto cristiano eretto dai monaci colombaniani di Bobbio. Divenuta sede succursale della diocesi di Brugnato nel 1519, la sua parrocchia fu soppressa nei primi anni del XVII secolo in concomitanza alla costruzione della nuova basilica di Santa Maria di Nazareth.<\/p>\n

La nuova chiesa si rese necessaria anche a causa del definitivo consolidamento dell’istmo con il promontorio e che conseguentemente port\u00f2 ad una nuova estensione urbanistica del borgo stesso di Sestri Levante; la preesistente chiesa di San Nicol\u00f2 non fu quindi pi\u00f9 idonea per l’esigenze spirituali della popolazione.<\/p>\n

San Nicol\u00f2 dell’isola is a Romanesque style, Roman Catholic parish church in the town of Sestri Levante, in the Liguria, Italy. The temple’s construction dates from the 12th to the 17th-centuries.<\/p>\n

Built originally in 1151, the building, including the facade, was partially reconstructed in the 15th century. and further altered during the Baroque period. More recent renovations have highlighted some of the original structure. The fa\u00e7ade has a pseudo-portal porch topped by a triple lancet window, the sides are walled medieval tombstones and inscriptions, in the left, a fragment of the 8th century chancel enclosure. The bell tower has a pyramid-shaped spire. The interior has three naves divided by columns with cubic capitals.<\/p>\n
