This small area is rich in many different types of habitats going from wooded and heathland ridges to wide open downland on top of chalk, resulting from sediments laid down over million years first in fresh water (125 million years ago, before the Ocean broke in, the South East of England was covered by a lake), then in salted water. Il Royal Pavilion<\/a> \u00e8 uno dei pi\u00f9 straordinari palazzi storici del Regno Unito<\/a>. Questo bizzarro edificio che sembra uscito da \u201cLe Mille e Una Notte\u201d<\/em>, costruito in stile architettonico Mogul e arredato all’interno in stile cinese, \u00e8 diventato uno dei simboli di Brighton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Il Royal Pavilion era la residenza di villeggiatura di re Giorgio IV, un noto amante dell’arte e dell’estetica, che lo volle disegnato cos\u00ec perch\u00e9 ammaliato dal fascino dell’Oriente. Il palazzo come lo vediamo oggi \u00e8 il risultato di pi\u00f9 ristrutturazioni successive operate su una modesta villa, che il sovrano aveva cominciato a utilizzare per le vacanze ai tempi in cui era ancora principe di Galles. La progettazione della struttura fu affidata al famoso architetto John Nash.<\/p>\n

Il Royal Pavilion \u00e8 aperto al pubblico, cos\u00ec anche tu potrai esplorare i suoi sontuosi interni, visitare i suoi stupendi giardini e scoprire la sua complessa storia. Da citt\u00e0 fortificata di una certa importanza, in seguito alla caduta dell\u2019impero romano divenne un semplice villaggio di pescatori, che riacquist\u00f2 prestigio e crescita demografica (con un picco negli anni\u201960) a partire dal XVIII secolo, con la moda dei bagni in mare. Il nucleo originale coincide con la zona delle Lanes, un intrico di piccole vie che pullulano di negozi e botteghe di artigiani, spesso animate da artisti di strada.<\/p>\n

Brighton Pier<\/strong> (1899). Originariamente era un semplice molo che permetteva lo sbarco dei passeggeri dei traghetti in arrivo da Dieppe, ma divenne progressivamente sempre pi\u00f9 simile ad un luna park, con tanto di teatro e chioschi di dolci, bevande e l\u2019immancabile Fish&Chips. L\u2019ingresso al molo \u00e8 libero.<\/p>\n

West Pie<\/strong>r (1866). Del secondo molo di Brighton rimane ormai solo lo scheletro; chiuso nel 1975 venne per ragioni di sicurezza, essendo i costi della manutenzione giudicati troppi alti da parte della Societ\u00e0 proprietaria, nel 2002 una tempesta ne provoc\u00f2 il crollo della sala concerti e nel 2003 un incendio, con ogni probabilit\u00e0 doloso, concluse l\u2019opera di distruzione.<\/p>\n

Regency Square<\/strong>. Sull\u2019altro lato della strada rispetto al West Pier, era inizialmente uno dei tanti campi che circondavano l\u2019antico villaggio di pescatori, adibito a pi\u00f9 riprese in accampamento militare; una di queste occasioni, quella del 1793, venne utilizzata da Jane Austen come ambientazione per un passaggio di \u201cOrgoglio e Pregiudizio\u201d (1813), nel XIX secolo fu trasformata in zona residenziale di prestigio. Fortified town of considerable importance, after the fall of Roman Empire Brighton became a small fishing village, but from 1780 the town started to develop and grow again (especially during the \u201860s) until turning into a fashionable resort. The area that is now the \u201cLanes\u201d, a maze of twisting alleyways famous for the extraordinary mix of antiques and artisan shops usually animated by buskers.<\/p>\n

Brighton Pier<\/strong> (1899). In its original form, it was an Old Chain Pier primarily used as a landing stage for passenger ships sailing from Dieppe. In 1905 a collection of amusement machines were installed on the Pier and later a concert hall and a theatre opened. Today also a stage for free concerts can still be found together with kiosks selling sweets, drinks and the unavoidable Fish&Chips . Access to the pier is free of charge.<\/p>\n

West Pier<\/strong> (1866). A much sadder story is the one of the other Brighton Pier of which today only the skeleton remains, but that still constitutes, especially in particular weather conditions, one of the most enchanting views available in town. Declared unsafe, it was closed to the public in 1975. In 2002 during a storm the walkway connecting concert hall and theatre fell into the sea and in 2003 the pavilion hosting the theatre caught fire. Causes of the fire still remain unknown.<\/p>\n

Regency Square<\/strong>. Opposite the West Pier, \u201cBelle Vue Fields\u201d was originally one of the fields surrounding the ancient fishing village of Brightelmstone. At various times it was used as military camp (Jane Austen used it as a setting in her novel \u201cPride and Prejudice\u201d written in 1796) and it contained a windmill. In 19th century, when Brighton became a fashionable resort, it was quickly transformed into residential area. Today most of the houses have become hotels.<\/p>\n

Brighton Pier (1899). \u00c0 l\u2019origine c\u2019\u00e9tait sur cette jet\u00e9e que d\u00e9barquaient les passagers des ferrys en provenance de Dieppe. Aujourd\u2019hui on y trouve une grande f\u00eate foraine permanente, un th\u00e9\u00e2tre et des kiosques qui vendent l\u2019incontournable Fish&Chips.<\/p>\n

West Pier (1866). De l\u2019autre jet\u00e9e de Brighton ne reste d\u00e9sormais qu\u2019une squelette\u00a0battue par les flots \u00e0 l\u2019air fascinant sp\u00e9cialement dans certaines conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9o ou au coucher de soleil. Ferm\u00e9e depuis 1975 pour des raisons de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 class\u00e9e monument historique jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019incendie qui l\u2019a presque totalement d\u00e9truite en 2003.
\nRegency Square. Brighton, in dem er wohnte und auch seine Patienten logierten, und schon bald machten sich wohlhabende Kranke auf den Weg an die K\u00fcste. Um 1780 entwickelte sich Brighton zu einem modischen Kurort. Diese Entwicklung wurde beschleunigt, als 1786 der junge Prinzregent (der sp\u00e4tere K\u00f6nig George IV.) hier ein Landhaus kaufte, um den gr\u00f6\u00dften Teil seiner Freizeit dort zu verbringen.<\/p>\n

Er lie\u00df es sp\u00e4ter zum indisch aussehenden Royal Pavilion ausbauen, dem exzentrischsten Palast Gro\u03b2britanniens. Am 4. August 2016 fand auf der S\u00fcdseite der Regency Square die Er\u00f6ffnung des 173 Meter hohen Aussichtsturms British Airways i360 statt. Es ist mit einer Plattformh\u00f6he von 138 Metern die zweith\u00f6chste \u00f6ffentlich begehbare Aussichtsplattform im Vereinigten K\u00f6nigreich.<\/p>\n

In Brighton befindet sich auch eine besondere Rennbahn f\u00fcr Galopprennen bis zu 1,5 Meilen. Der Kurs ist U-f\u00f6rmig (linksherum) und steigt zum Ziel hin leicht an. Er befindet sich inmitten eines Wohngebiets und wird von einer \u00f6ffentlichen Stra\u00dfe gekreuzt, die w\u00e4hrend des Rennbetriebs gesperrt wird.
