In 1734 architect Nicolai Eigtved suggested the Queen Sophie Magdalene to build a small\u00a0recreational area to Rungsted. Eigtved started the project, a small tea pavillion. It was finished\u00a0in 1744 and inaugurated on the name day of the King, May 14th. Though the queen was not\u00a0content with the building and already 2 years later the castle was rebuilt with a two storage\u00a0building with a large copper cupola at the middle builing and side wings with rooms for the staff\u00a0underneath the roof.<\/p>\n
After the death of Sophie Magdalena, the King Christian VII and his\u00a0queen Caroline Mathilde and Struense stayed at the castle, but not after the murder of\u00a0Struense.<\/p>\n
The king handed it over to his step-brother, heir presumptive Frederik. But Frederik had other\u00a0castles and in 1790 it was sold to the goverment. The first not royal buyer was chanceller\u00a0Johan Thomas de Neergaard, who resold the castle, because he did not know how to make it\u00a0a farm. The next owner was colonel Arnoldus Falkenskjold in 1797, he expanded the fields\u00a0surrounding the castle and started an extensive farming. He did only use the castle during the\u00a0summer.<\/p>\n
In 1804 the British marine landed only a short distance from Sophienberg, they wanted the\u00a0Danish goverment to hand over the marine. The restistence caused the bombing of\u00a0Copenhagen. After the bombing there was a huge demand for building materials and\u00a0Falkenskjold, who thought the castle was too big, demolished the top floor and sold the\u00a0materials to Copenhagen in 1807. Later also the northern pavillion and middle building were\u00a0demolished and the materials were used for farm buildings.<\/p>\n
After the death of Falkenskjold the property was owned for a four years period by Anna\u00a0Gustave Wedel-Jarslberg. In 1830 Hans Gustav von Lilienskjold took over. During his\u00a0ownership the fields were abandoned and the wood chopped down. When he sold the castle\u00a0in 1851, there were 4 more owners, merchant Ree, captain Wulff, large farmer Engelsted and\u00a0shopowner Schmidt.<\/p>\n
In 1872 consul Jens Frederik Bloch bought Sophienberg, he also owned the neighboring\u00a0estate Kokkedal, he used both places for farming, all together about 400 acres. He maintained\u00a0the house and garden. The consul and he wife had no children, so they adopted 3 girls. The\u00a0composer P.E. Lange-M\u00fcller visited the consul during the summer of 1883.<\/p>\n
The consul died in\u00a01892 and the widow stayed af Sophienberg until 1897. One of the daughters married Lange\u00a0M\u00fcller in 1892 and after the death of the morther in 1897, they inherited Sophienberg. And for\u00a0many years the castle served as their summer residence.
\nWhen Ruth Lange-M\u00fcller died in 1921, her 3 daughters inherited Sophienberg.<\/p>\n
The oldest\u00a0daughter Irmelin gave up her heritage in 1928 and the youngest, Vibeke was a nurse in India.\u00a0So Ruth became full heiress to Sophienberg. In 1930 she married Brahim ben Hannine, a man\u00a0she had met during a stay in Biskra\/Algiers (her father had stayed here for a longer period,\u00a0because of his health). In the years 1932-1934 Sophienberg was transformed into a house\u00a0suitable for use throughout the years. Fireplaces, water and electricity was installed.<\/p>\n
In 1988-1990 the rebuilding and restoration was finished and Sophienberg looked the way she\u00a0does today. Kronborg is a castle and stronghold in the town of Helsing\u00f8r, Denmark. Immortalized as Elsinore in William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Kronborg is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list (2000).<\/p>\n
The castle is situated on the extreme northeastern tip of the island of Zealand at the narrowest point of the \u00d8resund, the sound between present Denmark and the provinces of present Sweden that were also Danish at the time the castle was built. In this part, the sound is only 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) wide, hence the strategic importance of maintaining a coastal fortification at this location commanding one of the few outlets of the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n
The castle’s story dates back to a stronghold, Krogen, built by King Eric VII in the 1420s. Along with the fortress K\u00e4rnan, Helsingborg on the opposite coast of \u00d8resund, it controlled the entranceway to the Baltic Sea. From 1574 to 1585 King Frederick II had the medieval fortress radically transformed into a magnificent Renaissance castle.<\/p>\n
The main architects were the Flemings Hans Hendrik van Paesschen and Anthonis van Obbergen, whereas the sculptural work was coordinated by Gert van Groningen. In 1629 a fire destroyed much of the castle, but King Christian IV subsequently had it rebuilt. The castle also has a church within its walls. In 1658 Kronborg was besieged and captured by the Swedes who took many of its valuable art treasures as war booty.<\/p>\n
In 1785 the castle ceased to be a royal residence and was converted into barracks for the army.
