Un muro di cinta proteggeva la propriet\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>Proprio al riparo di questo muro, i volontari toscani affrontano lo scontro con gli Austriaci, tentando di impedirne il passaggio. Gli Austriaci, infatti, durante la notte erano usciti in forze da Verona, diretti aSommacampagna e Sona, con l\u2019intenzione di sfondare il fronte piemontese ed aprirsi un passaggio verso Peschiera.<\/p>\n<p>La resistenza dei giovani volontari, guidati ed incitati dal magg. Situata in aperta campagna, \u00e8 appartenuta ai Palazzoli fino alla fine del XIX secolo.<\/p>\n<p>Qui la Brigata Piemonte, guidata con coraggioso esempio dal principe Ferdinando di Savoia, affront\u00f2 tre brigate austriache che provenivano contemporaneamente da ovest e da nord.<\/p>\n<p>Lo scontro fu impari per forze ma non per vigore. Verso la valle del fiume, che qui scorre veloce su un letto di ciottoli e compiendo diversi salti di livello, vi sono percorsi ciclabili. Ritrovamenti del V-IV sec. a.C. in localit\u00e0 Cereta fanno supporre la frequentazione dell&#8217;area gi\u00e0 durante l&#8217;et\u00e0 del Ferro.<\/p>\n<p>Si ipotizza che il castello sia di fondazione altomedievale, ma sicuramente esiste alla fine del X quando entra a far parte del sistema difensivo dei Canossa. Il castello raggiunge la sua definitiva sistemazione nei secoli XIV e XV: formato da una cinta muraria e da relativo fossato, all&#8217;interno ospita la chiesa, il piccolo borgo oltre che una fortezza pi\u00f9 interna che difende il mastio e un&#8217;altra torre a sud oggi recuperata. La Fossa di Pozzolo, citata in documenti prima del Mille, quindi regolamentata nel &#8216;400 da leggi gonzaghesche, \u00e8 ancora oggi quel poderoso impianto che preleva acqua dal Mincio (non importa se spostato pi\u00f9 a valle dal moderno sistema idraulico Adige-Garda), e poi la distribuisce a tutto il medio mantovano tramite seriole, cascatelle, canali, dighe e fossi derivatori.<\/p>\n<p>Di Pozzolo \u00e8 fatta menzione in un documento dell&#8217;820, da cui si arguisce che in questo luogo fece sosta l&#8217;imperatore. Il 22\/9\/1136 l&#8217;imperatore germanico Lotario di Supplimburgo, ricevette in questa localit\u00e0, con sontuoso banchetto, Manfredo vescovo di Mantova. Per la sua posizione sull&#8217;ultimo pendio delle colline Moreniche del Garda, che segna il confine con il Veneto, Pozzolo \u00e8 stato molto spesso teatro di battaglie e di passaggi di truppe fino al periodo delle guerre risorgimentali.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;edificio attuale della chiesa parrocchiale, dedicata alla Nativit\u00e0 della Beata Vergine Maria \u00e8 del 1768 ma, nel 1837, l&#8217;architetto Giovanni Battista Vergani ne ha rifatto la facciata, inaugurata alla presenza del vescovo monsignor Bell\u00e8. Nell&#8217;arredo interno emergono le tele del cinquecentesco Paolo Farinati e di Giovanni Cadioli (1760), decorazione del soffitto attribuibili a Giuseppe Bazzani e il gruppo marmoreo della Madonna col bambino del
