The lightship Sandetti\u00e9<\/em> was a stationary ship. With its powerful light and foghorn, it guided other ships through the dangerous sandbanks off the coast of Dunkirk.<\/p>\n

Commissioned in 1949, the BF 6 (bateau-feu 6 \u2013 lightship 6) was successively named Dyck and Sandetti\u00e9<\/em>, after the sandbanks it was ordered to guard. For every new assignment, the new name was painted in large white letters onto the hull.<\/p>\n

The crew of this destinationless ship was made up of 8 men in charge of maintaining the ship and its lighting system, carrying out and transmitting weather observations or just keeping watch over the navigation channel.<\/p>\n

A major chapter in the maritime history of the city of Dunkirk was closed when the lightship Sandetti\u00e9<\/em> returned to port for the last time on the 3rd of June 1989, saluted by the sound of many shiphorns.<\/p>\n

Owned by the Urban Community of Dunkirk since 1997, it was restored and opened to public in 2006. Since, Bernard Quilliot (former Head Mechanic aboard the Sandetti\u00e9<\/em>) has regularly given guided tours of the ship.<\/p>\n

L\u2019episodio pi\u00f9 celebre della storia recente della citt\u00e0 \u00e8 la battaglia di Dunkerque, che si svolse tra il 26\/5 e il 3\/6 del 1940 e vide il reimbarco dei resti dell\u2019esercito francese e del corpo di spedizione britannico incalzati dalle truppe tedesche durante l\u2019invasione della Francia. <\/i><\/p>\n

Because of its strategic position, the area remained much disputed between Spain, the United Netherlands, England and France for centuries; on the 25 June 1658 the city changed its nationality for three times to become definitively French in 1662. <\/i><\/p>\n

But the main event in recent history was the Battle of Dunkirk, that took place between 26 May and 3<\/i> <\/i>June 1940; as part of the Battle of France on the Western Front, it was the defence and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe. <\/i><\/p>\n

Come in gran parte delle citt\u00e0 costiere del Mare del Nord, anche qui a Nieuwpoort la linea di demarcazione tra mare e terra non \u00e8 mai stata netta. <\/i><\/p>\n

I primi abitanti di questi luoghi, trib\u00f9 dell\u2019Et\u00e0 del Bronzo, colonizzarono le dune e iniziarono a bonificare le paludi retrostanti. Poi vennero i Romani che, proprio a causa dell\u2019inospitalit\u00e0 dei luoghi, dovettero faticare non poco per conquistare la zona. <\/i><\/p>\n

Ma \u00e8 ai tempi del commercio con l\u2019Inghilterra, nel XII sec., che i tratti della citt\u00e0 cominciano a definirsi; la necessit\u00e0 di un nuovo porto alla foce dell\u2019Ijzer spinse il Conte Filippo di Fiandra ad optare per alcune migliorie, cos\u00ec le strade vennero ampliate, si costruirono nuovi moli, furono innalzate mura e scavati fossati. In the Neolithic period this area was a marshy and swampy plain with here and there low dune chains, heath and little beech woods. <\/i><\/p>\n

Then, during the Iron Age, the marshes dried out more and more and the region started to get populated. Nevertheless, centuries later, Romans had a pretty hard time to conquer the region; Caesar spoke of an untold swamp from which you did not know exactly which part was land and which water, with tremendous tides and a poor population living on mounds to keep their feet dry. <\/i><\/p>\n

It was only at the times of the trade with Great Britain, under Count Philip of Flanders ((1143 \u2013 1191) that the need of a new port on the Yser estuary transformed the city; streets expanded, new piers were built, walls were erected. Nel 2000 il centro storico \u00e8 stato riconosciuto Patrimonio dell\u2019Umanit\u00e0. Il nostro punto d\u2019approdo in citt\u00e0 \u00e8 il <\/i>Markt<\/i><\/b>, la piazza del mercato, su cui si affacciano una serie di splendidi edifici tra i quali si staglia il <\/i>Belfort<\/i><\/b>, la cui struttura originaria, risalente al XIII secolo, ospitava un magazzino per il deposito della lana e del lino a cui, nel XV secolo, \u00e8 stata aggiunta la parte superiore ottagonale in pietra bianca, dalla sommit\u00e0 dei suoi 366 gradini si gode una vista mozzafiato sulla citt\u00e0 e i dintorni<\/i><\/p>\n

Capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders, Bruges is a snapshot of 5 centuries ago. Its history is one of rise, fall and rise again; in the 12<\/i>th <\/sup><\/i>century, soon after gaining the city status, river Zwin, which had given the settlement its prosperity by linking it to the North Sea, started to silt up. <\/i><\/p>\n

The city fell in a sort of deep slumber which maintained the medieval heritage intact. Then, like in fairy tales, \u201cBruges the dead\u201d, in the 19<\/i>th<\/sup><\/i> century, woke up and transformed into the \u201cVenice of the North\u201d, one of the world\u2019s first tourist destinations. In 2000 the city centre was listed among Unesco World Heritage Sites. <\/i><\/p>\n

Our landing place in town is the <\/i>Markt<\/i><\/b> (\u201cmarket square\u201d), with its gorgeous historical buildings, including the <\/i>Belfry<\/i><\/b>, one of the city\u2019s prominent symbols dating back to the 13<\/i>th<\/sup><\/i> century, when Bruges was prospering as an important centre of the Flemish cloth industry. The tower formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other dangers. <\/i><\/p>\n
