With its powerful light and foghorn, it guided other ships through the dangerous sandbanks off the coast of Dunkirk.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioned in 1949, the BF 6 (bateau-feu 6 \u2013 lightship 6) was successively named Dyck and <em>Sandetti\u00e9<\/em>, after the sandbanks it was ordered to guard. For every new assignment, the new name was painted in large white letters onto the hull.<\/p>\n<p>The crew of this destinationless ship was made up of 8 men in charge of maintaining the ship and its lighting system, carrying out and transmitting weather observations or just keeping watch over the navigation channel.<\/p>\n<p>A major chapter in the maritime history of the city of Dunkirk was closed when the lightship <em>Sandetti\u00e9<\/em> returned to port for the last time on the 3rd of June 1989, saluted by the sound of many shiphorns.<\/p>\n<p>Owned by the Urban Community of Dunkirk since 1997, it was restored and opened to public in 2006. Its history is one of rise, fall and rise again; in the 12<\/i><i><sup>th <\/sup><\/i><i>century, soon after gaining the city status, river Zwin, which had given the settlement its prosperity by linking it to the North Sea, started to silt up. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The city fell in a sort of deep slumber which maintained the medieval heritage intact. Then, like in fairy tales, \u201cBruges the dead\u201d, in the 19<\/i><i><sup>th<\/sup><\/i><i> century, woke up and transformed into the \u201cVenice of the North\u201d, one of the world\u2019s first tourist destinations. In 2000 the city centre was listed among Unesco World Heritage Sites. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Our landing place in town is the <\/i><b><i>Markt<\/i><\/b><i> (\u201cmarket square\u201d), with its gorgeous historical buildings, including the <\/i><b><i>Belfry<\/i><\/b><i>, one of the city\u2019s prominent symbols dating back to the 13<\/i><i><sup>th<\/sup><\/i><i> century, when Bruges was prospering as an important centre of the Flemish cloth industry.
