The <\/i><b><i>Cathedral<\/i><\/b><i>, founded in 597, was destroyed by fire in 1067 and completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077 under the first Norman archbishop Lanfranc (1070-77). But the crucial moment in the Cathedral\u2019s history was the murder of the archbishop Thomas Becket which took place in the north-west transept (also known as the Martyrdom) on 29 December 1170 by knights of Henry II for having engaged in conflict with the king over the rights and privileges of the Church. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Becket was canonized two years later and the Cathedral became a place of pilgrimage;
