Sebbene i primi insediamenti risalgano alla preistoria, la storia di Canterbury inizia in realt\u00e0 con le conquiste dell\u2019imperatore romano Claudio nel 43 a.C. e con la fondazione\u00a0 <\/span>di una citt\u00e0 fortificata. <\/i><\/p>\n

Dopo il ritiro dei Romani, all\u2019inizio del V secolo, la citt\u00e0 fu ribattezzata Cantawaraburh \u2013 \u201cfortezza degli uomini del Kent\u201d \u2013 da cui deriva l\u2019attuale nome. Nel 597 Papa Gregorio Magno vi invi\u00f2 Sant\u2019Agostino con lo scopo di convertire al Cristianesimo la popolazione; la missione ebbe un tale successo che Canterbury divenne il cuore della chiesa d\u2019Inghilterra e Agostino il primo arcivescovo della citt\u00e0. <\/i><\/p>\n

La <\/i>Cattedrale <\/i><\/b>d\u2019origine, fondata da Agostino e costruita su una preesistente chiesa romana, fu distrutta da un incendio nel 1067 e sostituita da un pi\u00f9 vasto edificio grazie al primo arcivescovo normanno, Lanfranco(1070-77). Ma l\u2019evento decisivo che determin\u00f2 il destino della citt\u00e0 fu l\u2019assassinio di un altro arcivescovo, Thomas Beckett, che nel 1170, raggiunto nel transetto nord da 4 cavalieri di Enrico II, venne crudelmente ucciso. Beckett fu canonizzato due anni pi\u00f9 tardi e la sua tomba attir\u00f2 immediatamente folle di pellegrini, di cui Chaucer ci trasmette un ritratto attraverso i suoi <\/i>Racconti di Canterbury<\/i><\/b>. <\/i><\/p>\n

First settlements date back to prehistoric times, but Canterbury\u2019s history starts with the conquests of the Roman Emperor Claudius, in 43 B.C. and with the foundation of a fortified city called Durovernum Cantiacorum. <\/i><\/p>\n

After the Romans left Britain, at the beginning of the 5<\/i>th<\/sup><\/i> century, an Anglo-Saxon community formed within the city walls and the name changed into Cantawaraburh \u2013 \u201cKent people\u2019s stronghold\u201d. In 597 Pope Gregory the Great decided to send a mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity and chose a monk, St. Augustine, to head it. <\/i><\/p>\n

The mission was such a success that Augustine was consecrated bishop and he established his episcopal see at Canterbury. The <\/i>Cathedral<\/i><\/b>, founded in 597, was destroyed by fire in 1067 and completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077 under the first Norman archbishop Lanfranc (1070-77). But the crucial moment in the Cathedral\u2019s history was the murder of the archbishop Thomas Becket which took place in the north-west transept (also known as the Martyrdom) on 29 December 1170 by knights of Henry II for having engaged in conflict with the king over the rights and privileges of the Church. <\/i><\/p>\n

Conosciuta soprattutto per le sue bianche scogliere di gesso, \u00e8 la porta d\u2019Inghilterra fin dall\u2019epoca dei Romani; durante la seconda guerra mondiale fu la citt\u00e0 del Kent pi\u00f9 colpita dalle bombe e dalle granate tedesche lanciate dalle coste francesi, che la danneggiarono gravemente. <\/i><\/p>\n

Known especially for its White chalk Cliffs, it has been the \u201cdoor of England\u201d throughout history since Roman times. Due to its immense strategic value the city was almost completely destroyed by German bombs during the Second World War. <\/i><\/p>\n
