Il Museo della Cattedrale rappresenta una realt\u00e0 del tutto particolare nel panorama culturale italiano.<\/p>\n

Questa specificit\u00e0 risiede, prima di tutto, nella sua condizione giuridica, a lungo unica in Italia: istituito nel 1929 e trasferito nel 2000 nell\u2019ex chiesa di San Romano, il Museo nasce dalla volont\u00e0 congiunta del Capitolo della Cattedrale e del Comune di Ferrara con la finalit\u00e0 di documentare la storia del tempio sacro pi\u00f9 importante della spiritualit\u00e0 estense. Regolato da una convenzione elaborata appositamente, esso rappresenta un esemplare modello di gestione mista tra privato e pubblico.<\/p>\n

In secondo luogo, dal punto di vista strettamente artistico, l\u2019originalit\u00e0 del Museo risiede essenzialmente nella qualit\u00e0 delle proprie collezioni: in esse vi sono raccolte infatti la maggior parte delle rare e preziosissime testimonianze dei fasti della Ferrara rinascimentale ancora presenti nella citt\u00e0 che fu teatro della loro creazione.<\/p>\n

Artefice della nascita del Museo della Cattedrale fu una figura cardine della storia culturale della citt\u00e0: Giuseppe Agnelli (1856-1940), celebre direttore della Biblioteca Ariostea. Attraverso l\u2019associazione Ferrariae Decus, da lui fondata nel 1906 al fine di tutelare il patrimonio storico e artistico locale, egli persegu\u00ec l\u2019intento di conservare e valorizzare le opere provenienti dal Duomo, grazie anche al prezioso sostegno di numerosi finanziatori italiani e stranieri.<\/p>\n

Inaugurato il 27 ottobre del 1929, il Museo venne plasmato sul modello del \u201cMuseo dell\u2019Opera\u201d, tipologia espositiva sorta in et\u00e0 tardo ottocentesca con finalit\u00e0 del tutto simili in diverse citt\u00e0 italiane. In linea con la nascita di queste istituzioni, anche a Ferrara il nuovo museo divenne parte determinante di un Ente Morale, denominato \u201cOpera del Duomo\u201d, il cui scopo era rappresentato dalla salvaguardia della Cattedrale e delle relative opere d\u2019arte.<\/p>\n

Oltre ai capolavori provenienti dalla Chiesa Madre estense, attraverso convenzioni stipulate tra Capitolo e Comune (1930-32), le raccolte compresero fin da subito anche opere di propriet\u00e0 municipale, fino a quel momento custodite nel Lapidario Civico, diviso tra il cortile dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 a Palazzo Paradiso e quello di Palazzo dei Diamanti.<\/p>\n

Il Museo della Cattedrale nella chiesa di San RomanoIl Museo rimase nella sua sede storica, un’ampia sala sovrastante l\u2019atrio della Cattedrale, fino al dicembre del 2000 quando, al fine di soddisfare le moderne richieste museografiche sempre pi\u00f9 attente alla salvaguardia e alla fruizione dei beni storico-artistici, nacque l\u2019esigenza di custodire le collezioni in una nuova sede.<\/p>\n

La scelta cadde sull\u2019ex chiesa di San Romano, contigua al Duomo e a esso legata anche dal punto di vista storico, opportunamente restaurata, assieme ai locali annessi, nell\u2019ambito delle opere realizzate per il Giubileo. The Cathedral Museum represents a very individual entity within the Italian cultural scene.<\/p>\n

This is firstly due to its legal status, which has been unique in Italy for a long time. Established in 1929 and having moved to the former Church of San Romano in 2000, the Museum was created due to the joint will of the Cathedral Chapter and the Municipality of Ferrara with the aim of documenting the history of the most important sacred temple of Este spirituality. Governed by a convention that was drawn up especially for the purpose, it represents an exemplary model of mixed private and public management.<\/p>\n

Secondly, from a strictly artistic point of view, the originality of the Museum lies essentially in the quality of its collections. In fact, they group together most of the rare and extremely precious accounts of the splendour of Renaissance Ferrara still present in the city that was the setting for their creation.<\/p>\n

The promoter of the Cathedral Museum was a pivotal figure in the cultural history of the city, Giuseppe Agnelli (1856-1940), the famous director of the Ariostea Library. Through the Ferrariae Decus association, which he founded in 1906 in order to protect the local artistic and historical heritage, he pursued the intention of preserving and promoting the works from the Cathedral, also thanks to the precious support of numerous Italian and foreign sponsors.<\/p>\n

Inaugurated on 27 October 1929, the Museum was moulded based on the \u201cMuseo dell\u2019Opera\u201d model, a type of exhibition that emerged in the late 19th century with very similar aims in different Italian cities. In line with the birth of these institutions, the new Museum in Ferrara also became a fundamental part of a Moral Body, called \u201cOpera del Duomo\u201d, whose aim was to protect the Cathedral and the relative works of art.<\/p>\n

As well as the masterpieces from the Estense Chiesa Madre, through agreements drawn up between the Chapter and the Municipality (1930-32), the collections also included works owned by the municipality right from the start which, up to then, had been kept in the Civic Lapidary, split between the courtyard of the University at Palazzo Paradiso and that of Palazzo dei Diamanti.<\/p>\n

Il Museo della Cattedrale nella chiesa di San RomanoThe Museum stayed in its historical location, a large hall overlooking the atrium of the Cathedral, until December 2000 when, in order to satisfy modern museology requirements with an increased focus on the protection and enjoyment of historical-artistic assets, the need arose to house the collections in a new location.<\/p>\n

The choice fell onto the former Church of San Romano, near to the Cathedral and also connected with it from a historical point of view, which was suitably renovated, along with the adjoining buildings, as part of the works carried out for the Jubilee. The new arrangement of the collections coincided with a new institutional layout that renewed the partnership between the Cathedral Chapter and the Municipality of Ferrara.<\/p>\n

Posta a ridosso della sponda sinistra del Po di Volano, Villa Mensa \u00e8 uno dei superstiti complessi monumentali facenti parte fin dall\u2019origine del patrimonio immobiliare della sede episcopale di Ferrara (da qui, il tradizionale nome \u00abMensa\u00bb).
\nCostruito probabilmente nel primo decennio del \u2019300 e pesantemente modificato nel corso del Sei e Settecento, l\u2019edificio presenta tuttora molti caratteri quattrocenteschi.<\/p>\n

Pur non avendo mai fatto parte dei beni direttamente gestiti da Casa d\u2019Este, Villa Mensa \u00e8 collegata alla corte ducale per gli illustri personaggi che la utilizzarono come residenza da diporto per il riposo e le attivit\u00e0 di rappresentanza, soprattutto durante la stagione primaverile ed estiva, quando le condizioni di miglior navigabilit\u00e0 del Po di Volano, presso cui sorge, favorivano gli spostamenti di uomini e derrate.<\/p>\n

Furono soprattutto i vescovi della dinastia estense a rendere il Sito oggetto di significative opere di riqualificazione agricola e architettonica, elevandolo a centro con funzioni di coordinamento economico ed amministrativo dei vasti terreni circostanti che fruttavano cospicue rendite al vescovato di Ferrara.<\/p>\n

In particolare, sotto l\u2019amministrazione del vescovo Bartolomeo Della Rovere (1474-1494) l\u2019intero corpo residenziale, gi\u00e0 edificato anni prima, sub\u00ec significativi accrescimenti, con la costruzione di un porticato al piano terreno e di una \u201csala grande\u201d al primo. Si deve in seguito al cardinale Ippolito I d\u2019Este il coinvolgimento di Biagio Rossetti nel cantiere di Villa Mensa, qui chiamato nell\u2019estate del 1513.<\/p>\n

Tra il 1559 e il 1562 il palazzo sub\u00ec continue migliorie interne commissionate dal cardinale Luigi d\u2019Este. Agli anni di Giovanni Fontana, vescovo dal 1590 al 1611, risalgono ulteriori ampliamenti di altri locali del palazzo.<\/p>\n

Con l\u2019incameramento di Ferrara alla Santa Sede (1598), la villa perse quella centralit\u00e0 politico-culturale avuta durante la signoria estense.<\/p>\n

Nel 1868 il possesso pass\u00f2 al demanio nazionale e nel 1878 ai conti Scroffa di Ferrara; dopo appena dieci anni subentrarono i fratelli Navarra, che inclusero la villa nelle disponibilit\u00e0 della \u201cFondazione per l\u2019Agricoltura\u201d, che ancora oggi porta il loro nome.<\/p>\n

A partire dagli anni \u201940 del secolo scorso furono avviati importanti lavori di adeguamento interno, necessari prima all\u2019attivit\u00e0 di un orfanotrofio, poi agli usi civili di circa trenta famiglie affittuarie di mezzadri, che frazionarono il palazzo trasformandolo sensibilmente.<\/p>\n

Located near the left bank of the Po di Volano, Villa Mensa is one of the surviving monuments that were originally part of the property of the Episcopal See of Ferrara, hence the traditional name \u201cMensa\u201d (Bishop\u2019s Land Revenue Office). It was probably built in the first decade of the 1300s and heavily modified during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but the building still has many fifteenth century characteristics, notable mainly in architectural forms and the different structural and ornamental details.<\/p>\n

Although it had never been part of the assets managed directly by the House of Este, Villa Mensa can be associated to the ducal court through events related to the illustrious visitors who used it as a residence for rest and recreational activities, above all during the spring and summer seasons, when improved river navigation on the nearby Po di Volano favoured the movement of people and commodities.<\/p>\n

It was especially the bishops of the Este dynasty who transformed the site by means of major agricultural and architectural redevelopment, making it a centre for the economic and administrative co-ordination of the vast surrounding land which was divided into farmlands that yielded considerable incomes to the bishopric of Ferrara.<\/p>\n

Under the administration of Bishop Bartolomeo Della Rovere (1474-1494) the original building was significantly extended, with the construction of a portico on the ground floor and a \u201cgreat hall\u201d on the first floor. It was Cardinal Ippolito I d\u2019Este who was responsible for the involvement of Biagio Rossetti, who was called to the Villa Mensa site during the summer of 1513.<\/p>\n

Between 1559 and 1562 the building underwent continuous internal improvements commissioned by Cardinal Luigi d\u2019Este. During Giovanni Fontana\u2019s term as bishop (1590\u20131611), the rooms of the palace were further expanded.<\/p>\n

With the seizure of Ferrara by the Holy See in 1598, the Villa lost the role as the centre of political and cultural life during the Este family rule.In 1868 ownership passed to the State and in 1878 to Count Scroffa of Ferrara. Ten years later the Navarra brothers became proprietors, and the villa was included in the properties of the \u201cAgricultural Foundation\u201d which still bears their name.<\/p>\n

Radical internal alterations were made In the 1940s in order to transform the villa into an orphanage; following this it housed about thirty tenant farming families who partitioned the building, transforming both its form and appearance.<\/p>\n
