\nSan Gimignano nait comme un petit village Etrusque au III-II si\u00e8cle av-JC mais commen\u00e7a vritablement son histoire autour du X si\u00e8cle en prenant le nom du Saint, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Mod\u00e8ne : San Geminiano, qui avait sauv\u00e9 le village des barbares qui avaient voulu l’envahir.
\nLa ville v\u00e9cut un essor important pendant le Moyen Age gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la Route Francigena qui passait par ici.
\nElle s\u2019enrichit d\u2019un nombre extraordinaire d\u2019\u0153uvres d’art qui ornent encore aujourd\u2019hui ses \u00e9glises et ses couvents. En 1199 S.Gimignano est devenue une Commune libre, apr\u00e8s avoir combattu contre les \u00e9v\u00eaques de Volterra et des environnements, et souffert nombre de combats int\u00e9rnes entre les deux factions Guelfes et Gibelines. Le 8 Mai 1300, San Gimignano a accueilli Dante Alighieri dans son r\u00f4le d’ambassadeur de la ligue de Guelfes en Toscane.
\nLa ville s’est \u00e9panouie jusqu’en 1348, quand la peste noire qui a frapp\u00e9 toute l’Europe l’obligea \u00e0 se soumettre \u00e0 Florence. San Gimignano est devenu un centre secondaire jusqu’au XIX si\u00e8cle, quand son statut de ressource touristique et artistique et la valeur de ses produits ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre identifi\u00e9s.
\nLa ville est inscrite au Patrimoine Mondial de l\u2019Humanit\u00e9 par l\u2019UNESCO pour son architecture m\u00e9di\u00e9vale unique et particuli\u00e8re.
\nA visiter \u00e0 San Gimignano :
\nPlace de la citerne (della Cisterna), pav\u00e9e en briques, dispos\u00e9s \u00e0 b\u00e2tons rompus, qui prend son nom de la citerne du XIII si\u00e8cle qui se trouve au milieu de la place et entour\u00e9e par des palais et des tours.
\nLe D\u00f4me ou l’\u00e9glise della Collegiata, consacr\u00e9e en 1148, est structur\u00e9 sur trois nefs et enrichi par de belles fresques de l’\u00e9cole Siennoise : Vieux et Nouveau Testament (Bartolo di Fredi et “Bottega du Memmi”) ; Jugement Universel (Taddeo di Bartolo), \u0153uvres de l\u2019\u00e9cole florentine : Histoire de Saint Fina (Ghirlandaio), Saint Sebastiano (Benozzo Gozzoli), de statues en bois (Jacopo della Quercia) et d’autres sculptures par Giuliano et Benedetto de Maiano. Ces noms font de l’\u00e9glise della Collegiata de San Gimignano un mus\u00e9e de grand prestige.

Mus\u00e9e et Galerie civiques avec des travaux par Filippo Lippi, Pinturicchio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Domenico di Michelino, Pier Francesco Fiorentino, Sebastiano Mainardi, Lorenzo Niccol\u00f2 di Martino, Coppo di Marcovaldo etc….. De plus, du mus\u00e9e civique vous pouvez visiter la grande tour (Torre Grossa ou du Podest\u00e0) construite en 1311 et haute 54 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n
\nLa culture du safran a une histoire ancienne ; beaucoup de documents t\u00e9moignent \u00e0 quel point il \u00e9tait intens\u00e9ment cultiv\u00e9 et de son importance dans l’\u00e9conomie de San Gimignano du Moyen \u00e2ge. Produit tr\u00e8s cher, il constitua un \u00e9l\u00e9ment important pour le succ\u00e8s des marchands de la ville \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque. En 1228 la Commune de San Gimignano paya les dettes, contract\u00e9s pour le si\u00e8ge du Ch\u00e2teau della Nera, une partie en argent et l\u2019autre partie en safran et en 1276 institua des gabelles d’entr\u00e9e et de sortie en trouvant un gain consid\u00e9rable dans le droit d’exportation.
\nEn 1295 la ville assigna m\u00eame deux personnes d\u00e9di\u00e9es au pesage du safran avec pr\u00e9sence fixe aux portes de la Ville pour encaisser la gabelle.
