This is the most suitable path to see the city of Pisa cutting it from the station to Miracles Square.
The square of the Duomo of Pisa – dominated by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Bell Tower and Graveyard (the Campo Santo) – represents an architectural whole characterized by a really surprising stylistic accordance, to the point of having been compared by Le Corbousier to the acropolis of Athens.

The choice of materials, with an almost absolute supremacy of the white marble, and the constant presence of blind arches at the base and practicable small loggias in the upper orders lead to the thought of single project, almost the expression of the group of artists that works well together in the same building site in a relatively short lapse of time. Still, this is the result of long process that saw various architects, sculptors and painters taking turns, in the space of more than three centuries, and among them some leading personalities who have marked their epoch.

Each visitor entering this space is rapt in the sudden vision of the four monuments, a vision that looks ‘miraculous’, quoting the fortunate definition coined by D’Annunzio. The buildings seem to spring up from a wide regular lawn, which however dates back to the XIX century, when th square was redesigned in neo-medieval slant, clearing it from many more or less poor buildings and from the vegetable gardens that were still tended there. Also because of these uses, the one of Pisa has no comparison with other medieval squares of the cathedral that, from Parma to Modena, from Siena to Perugia, see the structure of the city radiating from them. Nevertheless, this unusual decentred area has been the spiritual, and not only, heart of the city of Pisa.

(Credits: www.turismo.pisa.it)

More info and online ticket purchase: www.opapisa.it

[10.394723800000065,43.7232252

Neverthless, the the Tower was not originally conceived as a tourist atttraction, but to provide the Cathedral of Pisa with the neccessay sound-emitting device, outlined in a significant and symbolic form.
On 9th August 1173, work began on the foundations of the bell tower for the Cathedral of S. Maria on Piazza dei Miracoli. It was to be some distance from the church, about 56 metres tall, weighing 14.453 metric tons. Initially, the director of works was probably the architect Diotisalvi, the same person who began the Baptistery. Work stopped after the third ring because of subsidence under the foundations of the Tower. Soft groundand the fact that in ancient times a bend in the river Auser flowed here, making the terrain unstable, is the reason why the tower leans, making it famous.

The problem of instability brought work to an end for a long time. Building recommenced in 1275 under the guidance of Giovanni di Simone and Giovanni Pisano; three more rings were added to the three already completed. In an attempt to straighten the tower, the three additional floors bend slightly in the opposite direction from the slant of the Tower. It was completed in mid 14th century when the belfry was added. The structure of the Tower is highly unusual. It is made of two concentric cylinders joined together by a spiral staircase to the topmost story. Externally there are six rings of round-arched galleries. The marble ditch at the base of the Tower was added in the 19th century.

Over the past decades, much has been written on the position of the Campanile, postulating a possible symbolic eason for it, or indicating it as part of a hidden astronomy-inspired layout that would involve the whole Cathedral compound. The position itself is therefore the first of the tricky aspects of its construction. Obviously, this unusual location cannot be accidental and it is also true that the selected spot immediately appeared inadvisable, due to the nearby waterway, a branch of the Auser river derivering from the Serchio river that ran through this part of the city. As a matter of fact, we have to assume that the Campanile was built at the south-eastern border of the Cathedral square mainly in order to “adjust” the eccentric position of the Cathedral itself.

The Tower was stabilised after a number of studies and researches carried out over the entire XX Century and culminated in the intervention concieved and implemented by an International Committee in the years 1990 to 2001. The Tower now slopes at an angle of 5° from the vertical. It remains standing because its centre of gravity is inside the perimeter of its base.

(Credits: www.turismo.pisa.it)

More info and online ticket purchase: www.opapisa.it

[10.396596999999929,43.722952

La fondazione del battistero si data al 1152, ma la sua costruzione ha avuto una durata di oltre due secoli. The first stage of construction, up to the top of the first row of arches, was directed by the architect Diotisalvi. At the beginning of the 13th century Guidetto took over, and supervised the ornamentation of the doors and walls, up to the top of the circular aisle. After 1260, Nicola Pisano worked on the outside wall, up to the level of the archlets in the external gallery, but it was Giovanni Pisano who added the pediments above.
The construction adapted to to the proportions of the Cathedral, with which he preserved a perfect axiality: the largeness of the facade exactly corresponds to distance between its main portal and the west door.
The Opera di San Giovanni was instituted for supervising the new building yard and at first the citizens were asked to contribute with a one denaro tax pe month, ensuring a good start out of the works. The first Operaio, Conetto, brought back from the squarries of the Isle of Elba and of Sardinia eight columns and four pilasters for the bearing structure of the building, erected “with great triumph” in 1163. In these very years, the construction of the walls of the whole city, until then without any, started in the area next to the square.
Work was then suspended for a long time, beginning once more in the mid 1300s, when the women’s gallery was completed and the baptistery roofed over.
