A Paterno, Lo Smorto, La Petraia e negli immediati dintorni di Radda sono state rinvenute tracce di centri abitati. Ma \u00e8 sopratutto sul Poggio di Cetamura che sono stati scoperti i resti di quello che fu probabilmente il pi\u00f9 importante insediamento etrusco-romano del Chianti, che si trovava al centro di una vera e propria rete viaria collegata con tutti i pi\u00f9 importanti comuni delle zone limitrofe.<\/p>\n<p>Fu nel Medioevo che Radda si popol\u00f2 di importanti castelli. Nel 1201 il comune fiorentino che controllava gi\u00e0 tutta la regione, riun\u00ec la popolazione del Chianti in una &#8220;Lega&#8221;; vi erano Radda, Castellina e Gaiole. Nel paese sono presenti ancora oggi molti edifici medievali. Lungo la cinta muraria si trovano torri di difesa. Nei punti di accesso si aprivano le porte. Un cassero completava le fortificazioni. Delle opere di difesa rimangono solo poche tracce. Di notevole interesse \u00e9 la Pieve di Santa Maria Novella, un tempo la pi\u00f9 ricca ed importante del Chianti; numerose sono le sue opere d&#8217;arte fra le quali: una croce astile in bronzo dorato (XII-XIII secolo), una fonte battesimale a forma esagonale, nonch\u00e9 una ricca dotazione di vesti, suppellettili ed arredi sacri.<\/p>\n<p>Numerose altre chiese sono presenti nel territorio, come quella di San Fedele a Paterno, quella parrocchiale di Radda e il Convento francescano di Santa Maria. The whole of this area was populated by the Etruscans and Romans. Traces of inhabited centers have been found at Paterno, Lo Smorto, La Petraia and in the immediate vicinity of Radda.<\/p>\n<p>The remains of what was probably the most important Etruscan-Roman settlement have been discovered up on the Poggio of Cetamura, situated in the centre of a road system that was connected with all the most important towns nearby. It was in the Middle Ages that Radda saw the construction of important castles. In 1201, the Florentine Commune, which already controlled the whole region, organized the Chianti population into &#8220;Leagues&#8221;. Radda still conserves many medieval buildings, as well as several defence towers set into the boundary walls. Gates of access led into the city and a Cassero (castle) completed the fortifications. Few of these fortifications still remain today. The Pieve of Santa Maria Novella is of particular interest and was once considered one of the most important and wealthy parish churches in the Chianti area. It contains several works of art, including a processional cross in gilded bronze (XII-XIII century), an hexagonal-shaped baptismal font, a rich collection of vestments and church furnishings.<\/p>\n<p>There are many other churches in this area, such as San Fedele a Paterno, the Radda parish church and the Franciscan Convent of Santa Maria. Passato di propriet\u00e0 nella prima met\u00e0 del XVI secolo agli Sforza e in seguito a Buonagrazia, nel 1546 fu acquistato dalla nobile famiglia dei Pazzi. l XVIII secolo estinto il ramo della nobile famiglia con la morte di Luigi Cosimo Pazzi, la villa pass\u00f2 ai Gucci Tolomei, commercianti tessili di origine senese per essere poi acquistata nel 1850 da John Temple Leader che la compr\u00f2 a cancello chiuso, cio\u00e8 con tutto ci\u00f2 che era contenuto nella storica residenza.<\/p>\n<p>Eletta come abitazione e centro dei suoi affari, la Villa di Maiano, visibile sulla collina a Sx divenne la prima tappa di quei lunghi e complessi lavori di restauro che il ricco e stravagante uomo politico inglese estender\u00e0 a tutto il paesaggio circostante ed al vicino castello di Vincigliata. Temple Leader voleva infatti costituire un suo fantastico feudo caratterizzato da maestosi dettagli architettonici, scultorei e paesaggistici ispirati al Medioevo e al Rinascimento secondo quella rivisitazione tipica degli inizi dell&#8217;Ottocento.<\/p>\n<p>Con la supervisione del Leader, l&#8217;architetto Felice Francolini venne incaricato della totale ristrutturazione nel pieno rispetto della linea quattrocentesca dell&#8217;edificio. Alla Villa fu aggiunto un piano ed una torre goticheggiante con loggia che ben riflette il gusto per l&#8217;architettura medioevale. All&#8217;interno ed in corrispondenza della torre, l&#8217;architetto Francolini trasform\u00f2 il cortile centrale in un&#8217;ampia sala da ballo in stile neorinascimentale. The Architect Felice Francolini is given the responsibility, under Temple Leader\u2019s supervision, to restore the building entirely in total respect of the original XVth century style.<\/p>\n<p>A new floor is raised and a gothic-influenced tower as well and a loggia, reflecting the taste for medieval architecture, are added. Inside, in coincidence with the tower, the Architect Francolini converts the central patio into a wide ballroom in neo renaissance style. Elue r\u00e9sidence principale priv\u00e9e et professionnelle, la Villa di Maiano devint la premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape de longs et complexes travaux de restauration que le riche et extravagant homme politique anglais \u00e9tendra \u00e0 tout le paysage environnant ainsi qu\u2019au proche Ch\u00e2teau de Vincigliata. Leader voulait en effet construire son fantastique fief personnel, caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par de majestueux d\u00e9tails d\u2019architecture, sculptures et paysages, inspir\u00e9s au Moyen Age et \u00e0 la Renaissance, suivant une r\u00e9interpretation typique du d\u00e9but XIXe si\u00e8cle. L\u2019architecte Felice Francolini est charg\u00e9, sous la supervision de Leader, de la restructuration totale en parfait respect de la forme originale du XVe si\u00e8cle de l\u2019\u00e9difice. La Villa est \u00e9lev\u00e9e d\u2019un \u00e9tage et y est ajout\u00e9 une tour d\u2019influence gothique avec loggia qui refl\u00e8te bien le gout pour l\u2019architecture m\u00e9di\u00e9vale. A l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, et en correspondance de la tour, l\u2019architecte Francolini transforme le patio int\u00e9rieur en une ample salle de bal en style n\u00e9o-renaissance. Il suo sogno divenne quello di poter rivivere la magia del maestoso castello. Les h\u00f4tes les plus distingu\u00e9s et \u00e9minents provenant de cercles royaux, artistiques ou litt\u00e9raires de toute Europe ont visit\u00e9 le ch\u00e2teau. L\u2019area protetta \u00e8 stata istituita per valorizzare la memoria artigianale della locale importante attivit\u00e0 estrattiva (abbandonata dal 1950) e per migliorare l\u2019assetto naturale e la fruibilit\u00e0 dei luoghi. Tutta l\u2019area \u00e8 stata infatti sfruttata fin dal medioevo per l\u2019estrazione della pietra serena, una pietra arenaria che contraddistingue molti palazzi fiorentini.<\/p>\n<p>Sono presenti formazioni boschive a prevalenza di leccio <em>Quercus ilex<\/em> e cipresso <em>Cupressus sempervirens<\/em>, assieme a pino domestico <em>Pinus pinea<\/em>, pino marittimo <em>Pinus pinaster<\/em> e roverella <em>Quercus pubescens<\/em>; di interesse storico e paesaggistico la presenza di una lecceta d\u2019alto fusto.<\/p>\n<p>Piazzale Leonardo. On one side of the main square, at the end of a short but steep ascent, you find the Church of San Francesco. Still in the surroundings of the Square Mino, but in the northern direction, you find the entrance to the Roman Theatre. Beside it, there are the ruins of a necropolis, of roman thermal baths and a few other buildings of late imperial age.
