Questo tratto di costa, ricca di insenature e porti naturali, era un luogo amato e frequentato dall&#8217;aristocrazia romana imperiale che vi ha costruito le proprie residenze, come testimoniano i ritrovamenti di Vietri sul Mare, Amalfi, Positano, e Li Galli.<\/p>\n<p>Le prime informazioni riguardo ad un edificio di epoca romana a Minori risalgono ai &#8220;Documenti e Atti della Commissione Archeologica della Provincia del Principato Citeriore&#8221; (1873-74), in cui L. Stabiano ha scritto sulla scoperta delle &#8220;terme romane&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1932 un crollo avvenuto durante la ristrutturazione di alcune case nell&#8217;area ha portato alla scoperta di una camera sotterranea, appartenente alla villa romana. Gli scavi iniziarono nel 1934, ma alcune zone sono venute alla luce solo nel 1950, in particolare dopo il 1954, quando una forte precipitazione colp\u00ec la Costiera Amalfitana.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1956, mentre era in corso un cantiere per la costruzione dell&#8217;Hotel Santa Lucia, sono state scoperte nuove aree della villa decorate da dipinti che si conservano nel museo collegato alla villa. Intorno all\u2019Anno Mille venne popolata da un gruppo di nobili della Repubblica Marinara di Amalfi, ribellatisi all\u2019autorit\u00e0 del doge.<\/p>\n<p>La citt\u00e0 divenne rapidamente prospera, in particolare grazie ad una fiorente filatoria della lana anticamente detta \u201cCelendra\u201d. Nell\u2019XI secolo i Ravellesi cercarono di liberarsi dai legami con Amalfi: il borgo fu circondato da mura e le famiglie patrizie iniziarono a costruire le proprie sontuose dimore, eleggendo un proprio duca; nel 1086 Ravello divenne anche sede vescovile. Con la conquista normanna e la loro affermazione nel Meridione inizi\u00f2 il declino di Ravello, divenuta nel 1131 parte del regno.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1137 la Repubblica di Pisa devast\u00f2 per tre giorni Ravello: nonostante ci\u00f2 i Ravellesi, abili mercanti, avevano conquistato anche i mercati arabi e, tra il XII ed il XIII sec., la citt\u00e0 raggiunse circa 36.000 abitanti. Durante la guerra del Vespro (1282-1302) i Francesi occuparono Ravello, che si riscatt\u00f2 con 135 once d\u2019oro. The entrance doors are similar to those of Amalfi, in bronze, made in Constantinople in the XII century;<\/p>\n<p>Inside there is a museum, where are kept numerous historic details of the past.<br \/>\nTo remember the marble creation of Niccol\u00f2 di Bartolomeo from Foggia, dating back to XIII century and the XII century representation, with mosaic decoration, of Giona eaten by Pistrice.<\/p>\n<p>The Church of S. Giovanni del Toro, was built at the end of X century; we can see an &#8220;ambone&#8221; from XII century and a wooden Crucifix from XVth century.<br \/>\nThe Villa Rufolo, from XII century, erected by the Rufolo&#8217;s family and the Villa Cimbrone, are two site not to be missed for their splendour and their internal decoration. Les rebelles firent un heureux choix en prenant ce site pour y cr\u00e9er leur propre refuge: en effet la ville de Ravello se trouve dans une position ais\u00e9ment d\u00e9fendable, plac\u00e9e au sommet d&#8217;un contrefort.<br \/>\nLa ville prosp\u00e9ra rapidement, en particulier gr\u00e2ce au prosp\u00e8re \u00e9tablissement des draperies de laine anciennement d\u00e9nomm\u00e9e &#8220;Celendra&#8221;, qui fut c\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#8217;Ev\u00eaque Giovanni Allegri par le Roi Charles II d&#8217;Anjou, le 23 avril 1292, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son agriculture florissante et gr\u00e2ce aux intenses \u00e9changes commerciaux sur les routes de la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e.<br \/>\nElev\u00e9e \u00e0 si\u00e8ge de l&#8217;\u00e9v\u00each\u00e9 depuis  1086, au cours du si\u00e8cle suivant Ravello se confirme comme une puissance authentique et m\u00eame militaire. En 1137 Bernardo da Chiaravalle d\u00e9finissait la ville &#8230; tr\u00e8s ancienne, tr\u00e8s fortifi\u00e9e et inexpugnable, mais aussi tr\u00e8s opulente et si belle \u00e0 pouvoir \u00eatre ais\u00e9ment compt\u00e9e parmi les villes les plus importantes et les plus nobles&#8230;<br \/>\nL&#8217;histoire de Ravello se d\u00e9roule en liaison \u00e9troite avec l&#8217;histoire de la R\u00e9publique Maritime d&#8217;Amalfi. Son d\u00e9clin \u00e9conomique et politique commen\u00e7a \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9poque Normande. Ayant perdu la richesse \u00e9conomique, ses habitants s&#8217;\u00e9tant r\u00e9duits \u00e0 quelques milliers, Ravello demeure seulement&#8230; avec tout ce qui lui reste, c&#8217;est \u00e0 dire tout ce que l&#8217;on appr\u00e9cie le plus aujourd&#8217;hui: un habitat incomparable par sa nature et ses merveilles architecturales et artistiques.<br \/>\nC\u00e9l\u00e9brit\u00e9s \u00e0 Ravello. Richard Wagner arrive \u00e0 Ravello au printemps 1880, accompagn\u00e9 de son d\u00e9corateur, le peintre Joukovsky. A 1&#8217;\u00e9poque le grand musicien allemand travaillait \u00e0 la composition du Parsifal et il est \u00e9vident que le jardin de Rufolo a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le de premi\u00e8re importance dans la cr\u00e9ation magique du jardin de Klingsor. Fait qui, par contre, est t\u00e9moign\u00e9 aussi par une d\u00e9claration autographe de Wagner lorsqu&#8217;il \u00e9crivit, dans le registre des visiteurs de la ville le 26 mai 1880: \u00abLe jardin magique de Klingsor est trouv\u00e9\u00bb.<br \/>\nRavello a aussi eu l&#8217;occasion d&#8217;accueillir des artistes tels que le g\u00e9nial peintre et c\u00e9ramiste espagnol Mir\u00f2, les dessinateur hollandais Maurits Cornelis Escher et, au d\u00e9but do XIXe si\u00e8cle, les anglais<br \/>\nTurner, graveur, aquarelliste et peintre de merveilleux paysages, et Ruskin, \u00e9crivain et critique d&#8217;art raffin\u00e9. Depuis le XIVe si\u00e8cle, avec la pr\u00e9sence du Boccace, c&#8217;est le th\u00e8me litt\u00e9raire qui revient le plus souvent dans la gen\u00e8se d&#8217;une sorte de livre d&#8217;honneur des h\u00f4tes illustres de Ravello..<br \/>\nEn plus de Forster, Ravello eut aussi l&#8217;aventure d&#8217;accueillir \u00e0 maintes reprises, d&#8217;autres \u00e9crivains anglais comme Virginia Wolf, auteur de La Promenade au Phare. A Ravello, David Herbert Lawrence \u00e9crivit de nombreux chapitres de L&#8217;amant de Lady Chatterley et Andr\u00e9 Gide une partie de L&#8217;Immoraliste.<br \/>\nEnfin on ne peut oublier de nommer Paul Valery,Graham Greene, Tennessee Williams, Rafael Alberti et Gore Vidal.
